I like this as an alternative to the Royal Blue. It's a bit drier, so it burns differently, and is really nice for a quick smoke.

This tobacco is the top dog of the Mac Baren 7 Seas line of value-priced aromatics. I routinely smoke all the 7 Seas line-up and this one is far and away the best. The tobacco appears to be a ready rubbed mixture of Virginias and dark Cavendish that is heavy on the Cavendish side. The aroma is slightly pungent with a liquor note that is hard to identify for me. Perhaps dates and chocolate. The tobacco has average moisture. Packs okay and has moderate expansion on the char light. The smoking experience is where this tobacco goes off the chain. A complex flavor combination of chocolate toffy, fruitiness and the Virginia shines on throughout the bowl that is incredibly flavorful to me and smoother than a baby's behind. There is no bite to this tobacco at all, so whether you are a beginner or an aromatic lover, this tobacco delivers a great smoking experience you will find extremely attractive. Sip this one and there is no gurgle to be had. The burn is medium hot, so take your time. Relighting not generally an issue. The room note to me is above average with vanilla and slight sweetness that means you can smoke it all day long around finicky tobacco Nazis and have little fear of being condemned to the porch or garage. The aroma is that good. Overall, this one is the best of the 7 Seas line-up and IMHO outperforms RLP, 1-Q, CB, BR, and even some of the Mac Baren upmarket tobaccos. This one is part of my permanent go-to list and I am cellaring quite a bit of it to see what it does over time. This is what pipe smoking should be about and you are not likely to be disappointed if you try this one. Hands down a 5-star tobacco and great overall value here on CI.

I purchased a lb. of this one because it is that good. This tobacco has a nice aroma of liquor, vanilla and maybe dates upon opening. Average moisture. A dark Cavendish blend that is loose cut in appearance. Packing is uneventful and the char light shows real promise. The relight was so good I retrohaled to get everything this one has to offer. An incredibly smooth tobacco smoking experience ensued. You taste a bit of toffy, maybe vanilla and caramel, almost coffee - a liquor topping or casing to be sure. All around, very good smoke you can enjoy bowl after bowl and on my all-time go-to list in the cellar to see what time does with it. If you are looking for a smooth and flavorful smoke that doesn't compromise flavor or quality to provide an outstanding pipeful, then this tobacco is a gem you need to hold for your own. The aroma is indeed complex and engaging. Nobody will complain about this tobacco. It has a marvelous room note. The room note combined with the smoking experience make 7 Seas Black a true all-day smoke. Hands down a 5-star experience and potential best-in-class Cavendish blend. I have tried all of the 7 Seas line and Black Blend is the stand-out in a line-up that is pretty good. The entire 7 Seas line-up is a winner in my opinion and I regularly smoke all of them. My rankings are: (1) Black; (2) Royal; (3) Gold; (4) Red; (5) Regular. Regular is the lightest of all, but all are outstanding values for novices and aromatics lovers, alike. This line-up offers a real value and much better smoking experience than brand leaders like BR and CB, on par with Lane RLP-6 and 1-Q. I don't know what aging will do for this tobacco but I intend to find out and update this review on my findings.

I purchased this product for my cellar from CI. It is a ready rubbed dark blend. Upon opening you notice the complexity of flavoring that includes a creamy vanilla overtone and fruitiness (dates maybe?). No rating star deductions as the advertisement matched what I experienced. Product has average moisture for a flavored pipe tobacco. It packs fairly easy and lights easy. Relights are not a problem. Product burns medium hot and leaves a bit dottle - slight gurgling. The smoking experience is sublime. I taste chocolate, a bit of vanilla, some caramel. It's an incredible smoking flavor experience. Everything you want in an aromatic Cavendish is in this smoke. You would enjoy this all day long. If you smoke Captain Black Royal or Black, Lane 1-Q or RLP-6, this tobacco will enchant you. No deductions whatsoever for smoking experience. Outstanding. Room note is another matter. I would have to rate the room note as superior to other aromatics that I have tried over the years. Absolutely fabulous. I was at a flea market and the note attracted repeated compliments. The creamy vanilla and toffy overtones come thru in the room note and tells you this is your anytime, any place smoke. This tobacco is priced at a 20% discount to CB - the market brand leader. From a value proposition standpoint 7 Seas Black Blend is a standout that deserves a place in my cellar, so it will go thru a 6-month/1-year/5-year aging test to see if anything additional develops in the flavor profile. Absolutely outstanding. Whether you are new to pipe smoking or have been smoking pipes for more than 30 years like me, this one sails in at Number 1 on the Cavendish blend list of have to have tobaccos.

Being a virginia based black cavendish it is not as cloying as green river burly choices from the american market. It have mild sweetness from the virginia that complement the topping which i was informed by per jensen that it is vanilla and amaretto. Room note is sweet but not amazing. The burn quality is very good. I dont think it will benefit greatly from aging but time will tell. For what it is, it do a good job. Monotone sweet aromatic. Al janabi
