Description

La Galera, Tabacalera Palma, Jochy Blanco

Any of these words ring a bell? They should. Tabacalera Palma was one of the first Established cigar factories in the Dominican Republic back in 1936. But its story starts long before that. Jochy Blanco is the current owner and is the fourth generation of Blancos to work with tobacco. His great, great grandfather first moved to the Cibao Valley to grow and trade fruits and tobaccos in the mid 19th century. Today, they grow some of the finest tobaccos coming out of the Dominican and their factory produces cigars for many other brands that you have likely enjoyed before. La Galera is simply jochys first brand of his own.

Every cigar in La Galera's portfolio contains a well-aged binder and filler blend grown on Jochy’s own farms in the Dominican, draped in wrappers hand-picked by Jochy from all over the world. La Galera Maduro comes adorned with a dark, Mexican San Andres wrapper over a Dominican Piloto Cubano binder and Dominican long-filers, and sits comfortably in the medium-bodied range. Well-balanced with rich chocolate, cedar and spicy flavors, it finishes with a nice creamy sweetness on the palate. For the quality tobacco and years of experience that went into these Dominican gems, the price point is right as rain. Snag a box and I’m sure you’ll be back for more.

Good lil smoke, just a bit light for a Maduro in my opinion. Still worth having a few in the humidor for a good quick enjoyable smoke. Try'em !😁

I got this in the cigar of the month club. I’d never heard of La Galera. Boy, have I been missing out. Wonderful cigar. Well constructed, burned great. No re-lights and no touch ups. Great maduro flavor. Medium strength, full flavored. Just a really nice cigar.

I have to say I was pleasantly surprised with these. I received one in the sampler and for its price point this is a good cigar. It has a nice oily, toothy wrapper and has a pleasant mellow taste. I would actually say they’re fairly similar to a Ashton aged maduro, but at about half the price. They both have that smooth creamy draw that makes this a very easy to smoke maduro.

Draw is slightly tight, but didn't require maintenance on this beautiful maduro stick glinting with hints of oils. The burn is mildly uneven but only worthy of a note as it didn't require any touch-ups. The aroma is rich and earthy with cocoa notes. The flavor is the opposite cocoa with earthy notes and I like the interplay that the aroma and flavor have. The only interesting thing coming through in the flavor is a slight spice but mostly on the finish. The cocoa dominates but is a pleasant addition to the rich tobacco flavor. I would classify this stick as a medium-full flavor, medium body, and medium strength through the second third, but is distinctly stepping up those ratings in the final third. The final third I would say the flavor of the Earth and Rich tobacco overpower the cocoa and the spice takes a higher seat on the lips and tongue. That being sad a sip of coffee will accentuate the notes of cocoa again quite pronounced, though they are much diminished in the flavor of the smoke. Initially, the first 2/3 of the stick produced a large volume of smoke, but the last third I would say the smoke is diminishing quite pronounced. I think this is in part due to the draw tightening up a little bit more, and again not requiring maintenance, but still tighter than I would like. overall this is a very enjoyable Maduro.

This was part of the Cigar of the Month club sampler. I was a little skeptical at first, as the cigar was extremely hard and dry feeling when it arrived, seemingly wrapped too tight. It maintained this feel even after 2 weeks in the humidor at 66deg, 68rh. The wrapper has a slight sheen, and a pleasant texture. I punched the cap, and was immediately surprised by how easy a draw it had despite the hard feeling. Immediately got rich, leathery tobacco notes, with a touch of sweetness and spice. The leather gave way to a creamy chocolate about an inch in. Perfect burn, with dark gray ash. I had the cigar for dessrt, very nice with a glass of Woodford Reserve bourbon and a Lindt dark chocolate bar! Thanks CI for putting this one in the sampler; I'm more of a po' boy budget guy, so this was a much-appreciated treat!
