A Darker Reserva

Oliva is one of the finest cigar makers out there. From their Nub line to the fan favorite Oliva Serie V, critics and enthusiasts alike agree that they make top-notch products. And the Gilberto Oliva Reserva series is their newest line of products to hit the market. We first saw the Reserva and Reserva Blanc in 2017 and both have claimed 90+ ratings and some “Best Buy” awards in 2018 for their high quality and attractive price points. Gilberto Oliva Reserva Noir is the newest on the scene. 

The two previous Gilberto Oliva’s were on the mellower side of the spectrum but Noir cranks it up a notch. It comes dressed in a dark and oily Honduran Jamastran wrapper with a Honduran binder and a core of hearty Nicaraguan long-fillers. It gives the Gilberto Oliva Reserva line and rich, hearty option to suit the maduro fans out there. Light it up and be greeted with pleasant notes of roasted nuts, dark chocolate and a slight sweetness in a full-bodied format. The pricing is just the icing on the cake.

Is been a long time since I try a cigar with the full splendid of it, coming from a cigar manufacturer family in Cuba my palette is really hard to please when it comes to cigars. This is by far the closest I have had in a long time to my heritage experience. Someone is pooling some strings in order to make this happen, not super strong, bud full body, very well wrapped, magnificent selection of leaves, even burn with a smooth draw, increasing flavor as you enjoy the stogie. I end up buying multiple boxes, just concern that they won't come by that special. Must recommended. Enjoy it.

I don't know what the problem was because I selected another at random, trimmed it and lit it. It drew perfectly and subsequently was an excellent smoke. I hope subsequent smokes are delightful as well.

I have smoked about 5 of these since mid summer. Everyone of them have been a joy. Perfect construction and burn. Full body and pushes the limit with the pepper and spice, a real nasal massage, so kept the retro hale to a minimum but I really enjoyed it and will buy them again when on sale.

I tried one each of the Reserva and the Reserva Blanc. They were fine. Purely and simply, this is a VERY good cigar. I bought a box of the robustos. They come in a nice-looking but cheaply made box, that makes NO difference. The quality goes into the cigar. Good-looking, got some sheen, seams virtually invisible, double-capped, applied expertly. Plenty of smoke, dense, almost chewy, with flavors of earth, cinnamon, coffee, hay, pepper and a long finish. Full-bodied, tons of tobacco flavor. Burns properly, rarely needs a relight or correction. Whenever it burns a bit weird, it usually self-corrects. Goes great with a shot (or more) of whiskey.
