Rocky Patel Connecticut

Description

A deliciously subtle, exclusive handmade from Rocky Patel cigars.

It would be impossible for me to count how many of these I've burned through in the past few months, and I can tell you confidently that those who crave their cigars mellow in body yet long on flavor will go cuckoo for cocoa puffs over the RP Connecticut cigar line. Given the quality, the reasonable price (more on that later), and the pedigree - Patel is the maker of the 95-rated Sun Grown maduro, 94-rated Decade, and many other fan-favorite blends.

Suffice to say, I've been extremely excited about this cigar. Subtle, smooth and loaded with crisp, soothing flavors that can satisfy just about any palate, the Connecticut by Rocky Patel is, simply put, another outstanding super premium from one of the hottest makers in the business today. As far as price....you’d probably expect this to break the bank. But not here at CI. So, pick some up while you still can!

Rocky Patel has been one of my favorite cigars ever since I had the pleasure of meeting him a few years pack. As for his cigars I think, especially at the price point, they are above expectations. Nicely made, great tobacco, nice draw and overall a great smoke. The only issue I have with CI is your lack of including a small hydration pack with your shipments. Especially here in the south, the weather can get dry and not really a nice atmosphere for a fine cigar to be in.

I only gravitate to the very mild breed of sticks... almost exclusively with Connecticuit shade wraps. These RP's have the large ring size that supports a long, even burning cherry. End construction is suitable for either a "double punch" or a nice, thin cut. Body is firm, yet I have not had a hard draw yet, although once in a while one will burn up the side unevenly for a bit, but will self correct. Flavor is smooth, light, and does not get ragged for the last inch and a half.

A good big cigar following in the RP “regular” sized Connecticut smooth flavor and draw. The ring size gave a long time smoke with an even burn. Enjoyed this cigar a lot.

Rocky Patel Connecticut

The more one smokes cigars, generally speaking the more one tends to gravitate toward strength and complexity over time. I guess that's natural, just like beer, wine, coffee or anything else - as you get more sucked in your palate evolves and you explore the boundaries. Thing is, mellow cigars never really get fantastic ratings or wild-eyed reviews because most of the people who write that stuff, subconsciously or not, seem to give less weight to tame smokes. Maybe it's machismo, maybe it's group-think, who knows. If you read reviews of micro-brews you tend to see stouts and Belgians get more high praise than lagers do. But of course there are great lagers out there - and you can't compare apples to oranges anyway.

That brings me to the Connecticut by Rocky Patel. To be sure, Rocky is known for full-bodied cigars. Most of his blends - whether it be his Indian Tabac lines such as Super Fuerte, Cameroon Legend, or Maduro, or his Rocky Patel series such as RP Vintage, RP Sun Grown, or The Edge - are complex cigars that lean toward the fuller-flavored side. This is very different, and it all started last August. I was in Danli with Rocky, and I asked him to develop an easy going blend for CI with a Connecticut-shade wrapper to be called Rocky Patel Connecticut (he claims now that it was all his idea, but Scout's Honor, that's the way it happened). Rocky, his sidekick Nimish "The Hindu Prince," and I each smoked about 35 samples on that trip before settling on this particular blend. Now 8 months later, the shipment has arrived and it was well worth the wait.

First of all, it's really pretty. The Connecticut wrapper is nice and smooth, the band elegant and simple, the box beautiful with its gold cliche logo, nothing ornate. That's just how the cigar smokes: elegant and not ornate. The blend is tame from head to toe, with a pleasant, slightly creamy taste - no dips and valleys, it's utterly consistent and unchanging from the moment you put the flame to it right up until the moment you lay down the nub. It's flavorful but not over the top, not overly complex, not bursting with flavor. In essence, it's got a clean, crisp tobacco taste, simple as that. Me likey. The most startling thing about it is the ash, it's as firm as concrete. In fact, burning my first RP Connecticut the ash was well over 2" - to pre-empt the ashheap from hitting my lap I decided to tap it off. But "break it off" was more like it. Amazing. Overall one of the top mellow cigars I've had recently.

Yes, I know...I just did a write-up on the Rocky Patel Sun Grown. What can I say, Rocky makes some phenomenal cigars, and I am enjoying each new line that he’s come out with. Every time I crack open a box of Vintage, I know exactly what to expect from each cigar found inside. The same goes for the Sun Grown and the Edge, and Rocky’s latest creation, the Connecticut, is no different. The only twist, it’s mellow! Ahhh...an excellent change of pace from the fuller bodied blends, a la Sun Grown, 92 and Edge.

When we first received samples of this new line, I was ecstatic – it’s absolutely gorgeous and the flavors follow suit. Since I just finished my samples and the experience is fresh in my mind, I’ll cut right to the chase and explain the flavor. Connecticut generates an abundance of ultra-smooth, earthy notes that coat your palate to the nub. It’s just that simple. There are no hints of leather, no notes of white pepper, and although I tried my hardest, red wine and floral nuances could not be found. Nope, none. Just a clean, crisp earthiness, coating my palate in a smooth, velvety manner. Exactly how a premium, mellow to medium bodied Honduran should smoke. The aftertaste seems to last forever after each puff, allowing you to fully enjoy the genuine flavors produced by quality Honduran tobaccos. The wrapper does its job well, taming the blend into a sit back ‘n relax, mellow strength that can be enjoyed anywhere, any time, any day. And quality hardly comes into play. Rocky Patel is on the ball, and each roll is perfect. There’s nothing more I can really say about this cigar. It’s solid in every aspect. If you enjoy Rocky’s cigars and want a nice, relaxing cigar to break the monotony of your full bodied selection, this cigar is an absolute must.
