"KING OF THE CIGAR BOX GUITAR" BRINGS DEEP BLUES TOUR TO CIGARS INTERNATIONAL SUPER-STORE, BETHLEHEM, MARCH 15, 2014
Shane Speal, "The King of the Cigar Box Guitar" will bring his one man blues show to Cigars International Super Store in Bethlehem on Saturday, March 15 from 6-9pm. Speal performs deep roots and blues music on homemade cigar box guitars, a tin can microphone and a foot stomper made from a soda crate.
York, PA's Shane Speal is the world's foremost master of the cigar box guitar, a primitive stringed instrument cobbled together from discarded wood, guitar strings and and empty box. He will perform a collection of deep blues songs and stomp-rock originals, peppered with interesting and hilarious stories.
It isn't unusual to hear Shane perform murder ballads and hokum blues, while peppering with insane cigar box guitar covers of Prince's "Purple Rain" and Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus." His repertoire also includes blues versions of songs by Led Zeppelin, Rush, the Beatles and Jimi Hendrix. He also pays homage to the blues icons, too: Son House, Blind Willie Johnson, Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson. No song is ever played the same way and he rarely uses a set list.
Shane Speal is responsible for the modern resurgence of the cigar box guitar, a once forgotten instrument of American blues and roots music. He has been featured in the LA Times, Guitar World and Premier Guitar magazines and his concert has been featured in the PBS documentary, Songs Inside the Box.
Mike Argento of the York (PA) Daily Record newspaper states, "The best way to describe [Speal's music] is to take blues and gospel and country and Hawaiian and ragtime and put it through a meat grinder that's missing some teeth." Bill Jehle, curator of the Cigar Box Guitar museum says, “Shane sounds like Motörhead in a jug band!”
Few artists are as committed to expanding the boundaries of such a primitive instrument as Speal does. Speal says, “a Cigar Box Guitar is quirky and appears ‘broken’ from the start. They just don’t look like they should play any music. I love to see jaws hit the floor when I shove a socket on my finger and wail away." (from Premier Guitar Magazine, August 2009)
