H. Upmann by AJ Fernandez

With over 170 years of quality production under its belt, H. Upmann may not feel it necessary to collaborate. With a portfolio of cigars that keeps well in touch with a rich Cuban heritage, H. Upmann has kept to its roots very well and has developed a deserved following because of it. Fortunately for cigar enthusiasts everywhere, they’re open to partnering with some of the other bigs in the industry.

Working with blend master AJ Fernandez, H. Upmann has put together a bold yet classic blend that will appeal to all types of palates. This medium to full-bodied cigar is made of Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper surrounding Criollo ‘91 and Piloto Cubano fillers for a sweet but balanced taste that exude delicious hints of cocoa, spice, and roasted nuts. A delicious finish befitting the regal and historic H. Upmann name.

Great news! H. Upmann by AJ Fernandez very quickly received a 90-rating. The review notes, “This well-made robusto has an even draw that offers notes of black cherry and nuts with a sweet vanilla oakiness.”

Love the flavor...but
I absolutely love the flavor of this cigar. Medium bodied. Delicious. A wonderful 60 minute smoke. But I also notice that the wrapper has a tendency to crack once I start to smoke it. That has been true even when purchased from two different sources. That said, it's still worth the smoke.

It's an AJ.
Like everything else AJ makes, just incredible. Rich, enthusiastic flavor with a nice draw and beautiful construction. Every bit a combination of H Upmann earthiness, with the richness and smoothness of an AJ offering.

Money well spent.
These are some of the best full-flavored cigars I've ever had. I like to have 'em on hand for special occasions and a very select group of friends. Will purchase again; definitely money well spent.

Something Very Special from AJ.
I’m usually a Connecticut man, but this blend by AJ makes me rethink my usual choice. It’s a great cigar, and even though it is a medium-full bodied stick, it’s not overpowering and has a perfect draw and smooth balance. I get the black cherry and cocoa flavors. It’s just down right delicious!. I have enjoyed every toro in the 5-pack I ordered, each one more than the last. AJ has knocked it out of the park with this one. I’ll be ordering some more, most definitely.

Fantastic.
I have received these in a couple of different CI deals, and have not had the consistency issues described by other reviewers. I have found they must be stored a few weeks in the humidor before trying (more sensitive than most). For me, the flavor profile, and strength were outstanding. I would place these in the full bodied group, but not over the top full. Very smooth, and flavorful, I will order these whenever I see a deal come up.

Consitency non existent
Each cigar I got was different, the first 1 the wrapper fell apart, the 2nd I could not get a good draw on, and the 3rd did not seem to have the same flavor as far as the other 2 I did not waste my time.

Loved these so much that I bought a box of 20. Great smoke for any occasion. Smooth and consistent throughout, really reliable in their construction as well. You can be a long time smoker like me, or someone new to cigars and enjoy it just the same. Highly recommend treating yourself to these.

Not quite what I expected
AJF has been crafting cigars for other makers, and being a fan of his main line of cigars, I've been trying those he's made for other cigar makers. So far, I haven't been impressed. This cigar was certainly a bolder blend than most H Uppmans, but it lacked the depth and character of other AJF blends. Smokeable, certainly, but if you want AJF, I suggest you go to the source rather than a hybrid.

H. Upmann by AJ Fernandez
Excellent draw and construction, even burn, pre-light aroma is enticing...great tobacco smell. It does not get stronger closer to the end, but still stays smooth, not harsh. Med-Med Full strength, but definitely a full-flavor cigar. Can’t go wrong with this stick!

This cigar is big bold and delicious. It is a strong cigar, so it may not be the best choice for a beginner. If you like a strong, flavorful cigar this one is a gem.

Upmann by A.J.
I got this in a promo, and it was by far the best of the bunch! I agree with the staff review in that I have never been impressed with Upmann's, but this one by A.J. is a very nice smoke. Good construction, burn, and draw....well worth a try!

Fantastic Smoke
I bought the H Upmanns by AJ Fernandez in a promo. They were the best in the batch - hands down. The draw was easy - lots of plume. The burn was even right down to the nub. I will definitely order them again!

Unique flavors, unique cigar
Smooth, even, cool burn with plenty of smoke. 3 months in humidor helped with flavor. Now I guess I don't have the sophisticated palate to identify the many mentioned flavor nuances, I just know that the flavor is unique and unlike any other I have had. Will purchase again.

AJ never disappoints.

GOOD BUT EXPECTED BETTER
A good smoke, burned nicely and good peppery, earthy flavor, but stayed the same flavor through out the smoke. I had expected a bit more complexity. I'm a big fan of AJ, but this blend is just OK.

No Stopping AJ
This stick just received a 90 point rating from CA. Excellent construction and a very even burn. It isn't overly strong but well balanced.

A step up in flavor
AJ has taken a fine Dominican smoke and added a Nicaraguan flair to create an excellent cigar. Not full blown but enough to give anyone wanting to try a Nicaraguan flavor will find this one will pique the taste buds.

Of course it's good..it's from AJ
AJ does it once again, creating a big, bold, flavorful masterpiece, in line with his already impressive offerings (New World, San Lotano, Enclave). Very Cuban-esque, earthy and powerful. Can't compare it to anything really because it's quite unique. I'm also a big fan of H Upmann's Banker Annuity, but this is NOTHING like it. I'd recommend any full-strength cigar lover to try these, I think it will find its way into your normal humi rotation.

AJ Does H. Upmann

Joey J.

Let me be frank — I haven’t been excited about an H. Upmann cigar in… well, ever, honestly. I don’t have anything against the brand, but when I go through my humidor or browsing through the shelfs, it’s not something I seek out. All that being said, I’m a sucker for AJ. Light up an AJ stick in the office, and I’ll immediately float over to your desk like a cartoon character seeking out a hot pie on a windowsill.

So the other day, when my nose started sniffing out that fine Nicaraguan leaf burning somewhere in my vicinity, I immediately went investigating. And by investigating, I mostly mean begging for free cigars. And my work was rewarded! After harassing my co-workers for the umpteenth time, I was begrudgingly “gifted” two H. Upmann by AJ Fernandez Toros, and rushed back to my desk to find a cutter and a lighter.

Which brings us to our review today. The 2017 release, H. Upmann by AJ Fernandez.

This paragraph is for the cigar history buffs out there that like a bit of story behind their blend. If you just want to know how this thing tasted (spoiler alert: it’s pretty friggin’ good) feel free to skip to the next section. The H. Upmann brand has over 170 years of quality cigar production under their belts, originally as a Cuban-only brand, and then extending into an American-friendly Dominican made version as well. They’ve always been a “Cuban cigar brand” at heart, keeping the blends simple, the names traditional, and the packaging classic. Add AJ to the mix though, and we get the first Nicaraguan H. Upmann (that I can think of, at least), with a ton of updates — a stronger body, a more intense flavor profile, and a touch of contemporary color to the bands for those design nerds out there.

Clipping the foot, the first few draws on this cigar were a little tight, but after about a half inch things evened out, and the H. Upmann by AJ delivered a razor-sharp burn and effortless draw the rest of the way through. While the body leans towards the fuller side of things, the flavor is balanced and right in the middle of the scale. The Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper brings out those typical Sumatra flavors with a nice light sweetness and some baking spices, complementing the slight spice and earthiness of the Nicaraguan long-fillers perfectly. The finish is long, but doesn’t overstay its welcome, wearing off right when I was ready to take another puff almost every time.

In short, this is certainly a cigar I’d recommend. If you’ve never tried H. Upmann before, this AJ Fernandez made blend is probably one of the best H. Upmann cigars you can get. Pick yourself up a 5-pack, and you won’t regret it. Or, if you’re hesitant, do what I did — convince your friend to buy some, and then mooch a couple off of him! Either way, I’d put the H. Upmann by AJ Fernandez chiefly in the “win” column.
