1876 Reserve

For a lousy buck, even gramps would be proud.

On a trip to factories in the Dominican Republic some time ago, I was offered a boatload of a really nice, smooth handmade called 1876 Reserve. I’m guessing the manufacturer either drank too much Dominican rum or his abacus was busted. Don’t get me wrong, I certainly ain’t complaining because I think under normal circumstances it would’ve cost me twice as much to buy what I bought (I better remove his name from the mailing list so he doesn’t see this later).

What I do know is that this is an incredibly mellow Dominican cigar that’s well worth our ridiculous 2-fer price. In fact, the buy-in here starts at right around a buck apiece! Is that too cheap? Maybe it’s me that’s getting soft in the head. Oh well, if you like easy going cigars, you’ll love this deal.

1876 Reserve Robusto- Great smoke for the price!
I gave theses affordable beauties a try as I could hardly ignore the price. From my first draw, the flavor was great and the cigar has a really great finish. It hold up to any of the "high priced" stogies I've had. I will definitely use this as my go to for just about anything...

Good
I have enjoyed this cigar since you bought the first boat load of them. The old originals had some good age and were delicious. Today’s 1876 needs to age a while. Good cigar with wine and whiskey. Have given many bundles to our troops and they enjoy them.

Horrible burn consistancy.
This batch has a 40 percent waste due to center burn hole about an 1/8th inch in diameter. No, it is not my humidor. I constantly have to re-cut the burn end of and re-light. What a waste and nusience.! If it wasn't such a hassle, I'd return the entire box.

Better than expected.
These cigars are very good, but combine that with the price, and I rate them excellent. Appearance, shape, taste, and smooth draw are all first rate. Mild strength and firmly wrapped.

1876 Churchill Review
The 1876 Reserve has been my standby cigar for years. I like a mild cigar, and these are perfect. They burn well, have a good taste, and last long. The Churchill lasts about an hour for me. For the price, what more could you ask for?

Best Everyday Smoke
After looking for a good smoke I found these 1776 sticks a few years back and now just reorder time after time. I would hold these cigars up against other more expansive cigars with no problem. A smooth draw that can't be beat for the price. True you may have a uneven burn or a plug 1 or 2 out of the 50+ sticks but I have had worst with the top more expensive brands. I have taken the band off and given them to others only to get great complements on the smoke. .

The 1876
The 1876 cigar is a nice no hassle cigar. It is an easy smoking cigar with very little stems and pieces. They hold their shape to the end of the smoke. I haven’t had to use a stiff wire to clear to get smoke. The price was right for me at your two for price. These are the reasons I have bought them for years.

The Best, Cheap Toro Out There
I always mix bargain cigars along with my favorites. They're perfect for golf or in front of a grill. 1876 Reserves are great for this and quality is up there with cigars twice the price. I put them in the same category as the La Auroras as far as consistency and smoke-ability...maybe higher. I go through around 150 of these sticks a year in between my upper shelf choices and am never disappointed.

TRUTH
Bought a box of Macanudos. Pricey. So I back-to-back did a comparo 1876 v the Mac. Now remember that I make my living tasting as a restauranteur. And here’s the outcome. The Mac was absolutely NO better than the 1876. No, seriously. I can’t believe it either as the price difference is 5x. At least.

Best for the money
This could be one of the best kept secrets. For a little over a buck a stick this is an exceptional smoke. On the mild side the way I like them and smokes nice and even. The quality is good with only the occasional cigar that is not made perfect. This is my daily smoke and I enjoy them all.

Skimpy 50 ring size at best, won't stay lit.
Barely a 48 ring size, not a 50 as advertised. Will not stay lit, loosely rolled. Had to relight at least 10 times with reasonably frequent puffs. Smells like straw under the nose, before being lit up. Smoke aroma and taste is fair.

Great cigar for the money and great for an everyday smoke. Very mild for the first 2/3 of the stick, then turns a little peppery, but not harsh, for the last 1/3. Stays lit if you leave alone for a few minutes. Burns pretty even, but not perfect. Will buy this one again.

Pleasantly Surprised!
I never thought I'd be writing a review for the 1876 Reserve. I started smoking cigars about a year ago. I smoke several a day and have purchased a LOT of cigars! A couple of things have happened over that period of time. 1) My taste has evolved toward Medium to Full bodied sticks, and 2) I tend now to stay away from "value" and "budget" cigars in favor of those that I are higher quality in taste and construction. When I first started smoking, I bought a bundle of the 1876 Reserve in torpedo. I smoked a few early on and thought....awwwww, just ok. After a year in my humi, I pulled one out today just for fun to see what I'd think. Low and behold, I'm pleasantly surprised! While it's no Padron or Davidoff, it's a damn fine stick. A little soft/spongy but is super mellow, smooth, and burns like a champ. I'm now thinking I might have to try the maduro.

For an inexpensive they're OK. Several burn uneven and come unraveled. Some have a hollow middle which causes them to be harsh.

I've had them before and while I already knew that they weren't great cigars, they weren't too bad. This time, they were just awful; barely smokable even in a pinch... Sorry, maybe this was a bad batch.

Experiment Result:
I have smoked these beauties as my daily cigar for years. Spring of 2015, I decided to splurge and just smoke high dollar cigars to see if I found one that I like more. Didn't smoke any 1876 for 5 months. Enjoyed my variety of cigars, but I like these the best.

life is a compromise
great smoke? not really. burn even? not generally. good everyday smoke? absolutely. has nice flavor, and hard to beat for the price. if one of them offends you by not burning properly, toss it aside and light another. that's really what this smoke is about.

Will not order again.
Not mild at all. Was under the impression I was ordering a mild cigar. Rough pull/drag. Eight out of ten first sticks were thrown away due to thEurope poor quality.

You get what you pay for.
You get what you pay for. Thin smoke, too easy to draw. Not much flavor. I guess if you smoke a ton, these would be good for a morning smoke. That's what I'm using it for, but I would not buy again.

Promoted as "mild," but stronger than that
Stronger smoke than advertised (probably "medium" rather than "mild") and a few duds (won't stay lit; wrapped too tight to draw; etc.). Prefer La Diferencia Cubana, so will order that next time.

Little harsh and burn eneven
Love the price. The cigar just seemed to have a bitter taste and did not burn evenly. Normally the burn uneven doesn't bother me because sometimes it happens, but this has happened on several sticks. Some guys I've given them to thought they were ok and really liked the price. Good golf course cigar

Good Value
I bought these smokes because I was looking for a more affordable cigar for the golf course, yard work, etc. Overall I'm happy with the cigar, it has a decent start but the last 1/4 of the stick gets a bit harsh. I have given them to a few of my friends and no one has made comments about poor quality or taste, if anything I get the usual "that cigar smells great". I would buy again.

The maker of these sticks has not skimped on filler nor wrapper. The cigar delivers a combination of earthly and peppery overtones. This cigar is worth more than what it is sold for.

1876 Torpedo
The burn was even and clean and the ash always seems to fall after an inch or so. Taste and aroma were ok. No complaints about this cigar especially for the price! Would rate this cigar at 5 stars but like I said, the taste was ok, but at buck a stick, you can figure. Wouldn't mind buying them again.

Awful
Surprisingly, regardless of humidor time or setting these made me sick like I was a ten year old smoking my first cigar. And they're rated as mild. Horrendous.
5 out of 5
hoooray for 1876
The first part of my review should be everything in the part describing this cigar, then my own thoughts on it are that I really don't see how they can put out this cigar for the money. 95% of these cigars draw extra easy, and all of them taste great. The cost is also wonderful. My favorite cigar, and my humidor contains cohibas, montechristos, and macanudos...
2 out of 5
Awful
I took the good offer. 50 for 25. They are viewed as being mild. I enjoy mid to strong cigars but for the deal I bought the deal. I got 25 with the other back ordered. Surprisingly, they make me nauseous. I've been using them as a pass out cigar. Reminds me the Twain story. He saved the good for himself due to cost and passed out the cheap. It worked out good because everyone excused themselves early from the togetherness. The only issue was he had to pick them all up from the porch and front yard.

Fair stick
This is not the first time that I have purchased 1876. In the past they have be a very good, smooth, every day cigar. They always came with a light colored Connecticut shade wrapper. This recent batch came with a much darker wrapper and was not very smooth, did not have the expected taste, and left an after taste. Not what I expected or liked. The only good side was the burn even and are very easy to keep lit. Sure hope that you return to the Connecticut shade wrapper.

These cigars are pretty good. There's a nice spicey vanilla flavor to them that is really complimentary when paired with a good stout. A buddy and I enjoyed these with Morning Glory Espresso Stout, and it was a great pair. Definitely will pick up another at some point.

Beware, its not a Connecticut wrapped cigar, possibly Maduro.
I have cut and pasted below comments made prior about this product and agree completely. This is not the same cigar I have bought in the past. Possibly the Maduro that's mislabeled ???? Not the Connecticut wrapper and much harsher smoke. Not a happy customer. “My first order of this toro cigar was wonderful a nice smooth and light flavor and taste. It made me decide that this should be my cigar of choice. My second order as a torpedo was very disappointing. The color was much darker and the taste was much harsher. I then placed new order for the same cigar but back to the toro. They came in and they also had a much darker color than my very first order. I am believing that these 2 orders were actually Maduros in error. This last lot was better tasting, but still not as light as the very first order. For all the years I have been a customer this is the first time I felt I needed to express my thoughts.”

1876 Churchill Reserve - Feedback
This is the second time I have purchased this type of bundle and I have not regretted it. They smoke nice and easy, a slow burn, and each one is good for 9 holes of golf and I don't have to keep lighting it up! The only negative thing I could say about them is to keep them in a humidor, as you should any cigar. I have left a couple of them in my car for about two days and wrapper was not taking kindly to it. It was hot and humid during this time, but they did did still crack, but I would still buy and recommend these to anyone who likes these type of cigars.

I've been looking for an inexpensive, everyday cigar for a while. Trying many, these have been a validation of a youtube review I found a while back! Are these perfect? No, are they when compared to the price? Yes! Right out of the box I was pleasantly surprised! A few weeks in my humidor, they've just got better! I have FINALLY found my inexpensive, everyday cigar! I would highly recommend for anyone looking for an inexpensive, everyday cigar!!!

Dry
I can understand why you're getting rid of these as a 2fer. They're dried out and crack and peel when smoking them. I snip the tip and you hear it crunch and crackle. I like this brand as a daily smoke and the price but don't think I'll order a 2fer again.

Decent cigar but it will not stay lit!!!
Good , mild cigar. Problem is you have to work too hard to keep it lit. Try to smoke it on the course and you will be re-lighting it after every shot. Probably should have realized you can't get a good cigar this cheap. Gonna stick with the Baccarat.

1876 Reserve Churchill 2-fer
Overall, a decent cigar. A little expensive for what it is. Would rate the cigar higher, but the construction of about half of them was bad --- they were very hard to draw and them would go out without a near constant draw.
5 out of 5
Only fair, good price
The product was not up to Gurka standards. I would have rather had half the cigars but regular stock. Must have been a special make up certainly not the quality I have come to e pect. Would not do it again. Feel like I was mislead. Very loosely wrapped, outer wrap became unwrapped quickly. One star!

Great every day kick around smoke!
I bought this 2fer bundle based on the reviews here. I was looking for a cheap, boat washing, yard work, smoke. The first 3 sticks I pulled out were completely un-smokable, they either disintegrated upon clipping or disintegrated while smoking. I almost sent both mazo’s back but decided to keep on going. I must have had the luck of the draw of pulling all the bad sticks out of the bunch up front because the last 5-6 have been perfect. Great burn, great draw, more complexity in the flavor than I would expect for a $1 stick. Even factoring the rejects you’ll likely get out of each mazo this is still a great buy.

Good for the price but not in the grand scheme of things
This is more of a rating at the price point more than against the whole field of cigars. For the price they aren't bad. They're really a don't think about it smoke. Before lighting them they smell great, I was hoping for some of that to carry over and it just didn't. Pre-light it smells slightly sweet with a hint of cocoa, oak and cream. You get maybe a slight sweet tobacco right at the beginning with a little ever so slight bit of spice on the back of the tongue. That goes away quick and turns more of a charred wood with the little spice continuing. The finish is super short. This in the end is a very mild smoke and ends up being really one-dimensional. The construction and draw were good. The burn was pretty good, slight waves but didn't need any touch up, i actually set it down for over 5 minutes and it was still completely lit when I picked it back up. There was a little bit of tunneling but I'll chalk that up to letting it sit so long. It did make it over an hour before I put it out. Is it a bad cigar? No, just kinda boring.

Cheap cigar OK for the golf course but not much else. Usually find one or two that are not smoke-able due to defects.
