Torano Hogshead

Hogs...what?

Look, I’m not here to argue the fine points of cigar naming, but I’m also not above serving up an impromptu history lesson. Plus, this one makes perfect sense. A hogshead, besides just being served on a silver platter with an apple in its mouth, is a large wooden barrel that tobacco or alcohol was transported and stored in back when great great grand pappy was still around. This not only made lugging product from place to place easier, it also allowed whatever was inside to marry and age. And now that I’m done playing professor, welcome the newest member of the Torano family: Hogshead. Just as the name implies, expect a well-balanced handmade equipped with ample flavor.

Torano Hogshead brings deep flavors in spades, thanks to a three country blend of Nicaraguan, Dominican, and Pennsylvanian filler leaves. This hearty, dense core is then met with a thick Brazilian Arapiraca wrapper leaf. The end result is a complex, rich display that’s slightly spicy, issuing notes of coffee, earth, and pepper. Medium to full-bodied, and brimming with rustic old school charm (check out the awesome burlap packaging), this one is going to make some waves in a jiffy. The highly enjoyable price tag is merely icing on the cake. Sweet, delicious icing….oh yes.

constant hard draw
WOW!!!! Great taste and burn!!! I usually have to throw 3 or more a way in a 20-count bundle because of such a HARD DRAW...that even remediation attempts fail (ie, removing some tobacco with needle-nose tweezers, decapitating head of cigar, poking a wood skewer used for grilling halfway in). Such a great cigar otherwise. I wish someone would tell "rollers" of cigar at factory this.

Hogshead Review
I used to be a big Torano fan but have not smoked any in several years. This was a great deal and a pleasant surprise. I like the flavor, draws well and re-lights without backing up and becoming bitter or sharp. I shall definitely be purchasing this one again.

A very good cigar and priced right.
This is a wonderful cigar. Full body and great aroma. This cigar has a nice robust flavor and gets a little harsher as it burns past the halfway point, but not much harsher. I would recommend these cigars. They are good for lounging, or just outside tooling around or grilling. A+

The heck with the name, these babies are outstanding, especially for the price. Lot's of flavor from the long filler, which is a must for me. Can't stand tobacco bits in my mouth from those "sandwich" cigars. Well constructed, lots of smoke and great taste.

Satisfying -- not sophisticated
Opening the burlap sack I first notice how solid these 5x54 Robustos feel. They’re thick and dark with a stiff wrapper showing some features and veins but no bumps or spots. A hogshead refers to something aged in a liquor barrel which gives this stick a perfect name. Three longfillers from Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, and Pennsylvania are tucked inside an Arapiraca wrapper from Brazil. For me, this is a satisfying smoke. Not sophisticated, not special, but quite satisfying. It’s not an oily wrapper, nor is it dry. This was stiff in form but had just a little give and was dusted with plume while holding a very tightly packed range of shades in leaf. The first smell gave me oak and hay. An unlit draw delivered early flavors of oak, merlot casks, and a whiff of alfalfa. The draw was slightly resistant but not enough for concern. The foot toasted up nicely and initial draws had strong cedar and merlot. The wind on my patio sent it into an instant inch-long run run and the flavor got bitter. Fixing the burn with my torch helped but it’s still running and needs to cool. I set the cigar down to rest. … Okay, the burn has evened up and the flavor has opened up. Now it’s robust with loads of oak, cedar, plenty of pepper and shades of wine in the thick and generous honey-laced smoke. It’s sturdy and rolls nicely in the fingers. It pauses pleasantly on the lips, a smooth crown to gnaw on. The ash burns in dark-to-light rings forming a zebra pattern and halfway down the ash thuds to the floor. The flavor is full-tilt now and the level of relaxation this stick has inspired is somewhere around eleven. So satisfying! The flavor doesn’t shift much into the second half, still plenty of pepper and cedar. It catches a bitter edge, like a vinegar after bite. But its in no way unpleasant. In fact, its startlingly rewarding. Savory cigars are underrated. The final draws are creamy and smooth adding to the cedar and pepper a slight hint of lime. It holds it’s shape to the end with solid construction and makes my lips tingle this time which hasn’t been the case with the whole roll. I typically set this down with under an inch left — it is satisfying at this point, and its not giving off anything so unique or special that I feel like wrestling out every last smoldering ember. Pairs nicely with coffee, jerky, darker red wines, and bourbon. Travels well and holds its flavor in all kinds of weather. So far I’ve enjoyed all of these. I’m at 18 of 20 and only three have suffered from wind exposure or a bad light. Typically the first inch it settles in and then it opens up staying fairly uniform through the end. It can give a hint of root beer at the final inch but rarely. I like to smoke them by the marina — the salt air complements the profile every time.

So so
Stayed lit with sufficient smoke. However, it tasted as bad as it smelled. An old man passing by me said he never smelled a cigar as bad as the one I was smoking. It was this cigar I was smoking. Unfortunately, I don’t think I would by it again. I hate saying that because Torano’s have be fine for me in the past.

Excellent "BUT"
I would have given this 5 stars however as with all Torano product that I have purchased lately I am finding that there are more than a few in each batch rolled too tight and plugged solid. Not a lot of enjoyment when you can't draw. The others were very nice.

Ho Hum
After all of the hype and build— up about this cigar, the result, where the rubber meets the road as they say, is in the smoking! Here is my review. The cigar looks and feels nice. The smoking and flavor, just like many many cigars out there average at best. The wrapper is too thin and easily cracks and the draw is poor. Save your money! Next time, don’t believe the hype!!!

Well made. Firm build, both body and head. Wrapper somewhat veined. Seems narrow for a 52. Rolled very tight, which produces a hard draw. Suggest opening the smoke with your tool of choice. I rate medium to medium/full. Not a bad smoke at all.

Lots of country charm with this stick.
Grabbed a bundle on a whem Whelan hunting bargain bundles. It will now be in my regular rotation. A nice change of peace. Honestly it's the best Torano I've had. Cut to numb it behaves as a good cigars should. Love the burlapbag. Hate the name except it is memorable. Which I suppose is the point. But it tastes nice at a very reasonable price.

Bad Idea
These are not good at all. They burn fairly quickly and taste slightly better than a philly blunt. Best thing I can say about them is they kept the bugs away while I was fishing. Do yourself a favor and do not buy these.

Everyday Kind of Stick
For the price point it's a great cigar just smoked one the notes I dont taste no pepper but some small hints of spices but overall good cigar the burn is even and solid and doesn't fall away by walking around so that's another reason for 5 stars on Hogs Head in burlap

My first time trying a Torano but I ordered based on the reviews. They were all spot on. Great cigar. The flavor really gets going as you smoke it. I'll be on the lookout for these again!

Did not meet expectations.
Extremely harsh cigar... Good construction, just not good quality tobacco.

Customer Testimonials
I have smoked many Torano cigars, most that I have smoked cost many more dollars than the Hogshead....but this is by far the best cigar I have smoked from Torano. Most of the line I find bland, I want to taste pure pleasure, I want a kick, THE KICK, and what some reviewers have described as harshness, I find to be refreshing, and good for my soul. GIVE ME MORE AND MORE....AND MORE... You are beginning to learn how to make fine cigars, Mr. Charlie Torano!!....Excellent idea on the packaging for the Hogshead, by the way.
No matter how many you buy you'll wish you had ordered more. One great value.
I'm a Padron guy, X000 series, but always looking for a good smoke. CI had a deal going so I grabbed a fiver. Fired one up upon arrival and did a double take. This is a kick butt smoke. Could not believe how good it is. We all taste different, but you really have to give these a try. It's a sleeper and most of you will fall in love. Don't miss out. WTG Torano!
Good blend and consistent from one mazo to the next, with excellent construction. Even burn, great draw. Only one plugged stick in 7 mazos.
Somewhat harsh. Not a whole lot of flavor development. I guess I was expecting more from this name brand manufacturer. It is what it is for the price. Consistently smooth draw though.
This was a nice surprise. Looks good and it's well made. Burned even and it's pretty darn tasty. This one is easy on the wallet, so when you get home you can smoke a couple of em. Don't expect it to replace those premiums that you might pull out for the weekend, but it is a great smoke for the money. You won't be disappointed for ordering a bundle or two.
A pretty good smoke for the money, not a disappointment but not one of Torano's top tier offerings. I would put this in the same category as the Coliseum. If you are looking for a well made, great yard cigar, you'd be hard pressed to beat it for the price.... If you are going to spend a couple hours out on your lawn tractor or at your favorite fishing hole, take a couple Hogshead Gordos with you and have a nice day.
These have the flavor profile that I associate with a high quality medium-full cigar. This is a good looking cigar with a perfect draw. The only complaint I have is that the ash doesn't hold long.... Still, these smokes are simply delicious and I just received a second bundle of these to hide away and age.
WOW. Just received 2 days ago and right out of the box, great smoke. These will not last in my humi long enough to see how good they could be. Just a nice med-full solid cigar.
okay folks, walk don't run to get your order in on these! Wow! This is by far the best inexpensive cigar I have smoked in years!, I am a daily smoker. Enjoying the likes of Tatuaje, Nuca Rustica, Liga, Padron and Ashton, just to name a few. I have smoked Torano cigars for years and love Charlies work. If you like a med-Full bodied cigar with lots of character that smokes like a champ get some!
