Romeo y Julieta RyJ Nicaragua by AJ Fernandez New

That fresh new collaboration

AJ Fernandez certainly has the Midas touch. Indeed, every brand AJ touches turns to gold, and Altadis has clearly picked up on this. Not familiar with the Altadis name? They’re the brains behind brands like Montecristo, Romeo y Julieta, and H. Upmann, and in the last few years they’ve been working with AJ to produce some amazingly delicious blends. Case in point? The Romeo y Julieta RyJ Nicaragua – another beautiful entry in this collaborative story.

For this latest collaboration between Altadis, USA and AJ Fernandez, AJ utilized a beautiful Nicaraguan Habano 2000 wrapper leaf. This Nicaraguan puro is a beautifully produced powerhouse blend, delivering waves of espresso, black pepper, cedar and earth as it burns slowly to the nub. As for performance? RyJ Nicaragua delivers like a champ – but really, what else would you expect from the latest team-up of two of the world’s biggest brands?

A rare AJ miss
As I've written in most of my previous reviews, I love (almost) all AJ. On this one, not so much. A few years ago there was another RyJ blend out, very bold, spicy, lots of kick with ometepe tobacco in the mix. Based on that and enjoying most AJ offerings, I tried these. What I got was nothing like the previous iteration. It was pretty blah at the beginning, and throughout. I've only smoked 2 so far and had the same result. I will not stop touting AJ's products, but please don't start with this one and get a bad impression of a master blender. Instead, go for the Romeo y Julieta by AJ Fernandez (5 stars), AJ Fernandez New World (5 stars) or Diesel Heart of Darkness (5 stars).

This Romeo Y Julieta brand..
I’ve had better, I have to say. They were dry when they arrived. I’m smoking them anyway. Did I say I’ve had better?
