Mac Baren Black Ambrosia Pipe Tobacco

Description

The MacBaren Black Ambrosia Pipe Tobacco meets high expectations. Legend has it that the Greek gods and goddesses treasured a honey-flavored snack called Ambrosia. Although the precise composition of the flavoring in this blend is a secret, various fruit oils have been added to loose cut Virginia and a generous portion of Modern Cavendish. A mellow, highly aromatic blend offering sweet notes of honey and fruit… Nectar of the Gods!

I purchased this thru CI and experienced very prompt shipping. This is a loose cut aromatic. Upon opening the citrus aroma is the main aroma once detects and a hint of Virginia. This tobacco includes a dark Cavendish that I assume is part of the Mac Baren "modern Cavendish" blend. No deductions as everything was as advertised. The tobacco has average moisture and packed okay. Char light was okay but no real expansion. The smoking experience was fairly smooth with a noted small bite to the blend that cost a point on ratings as it is advertised as being very mild. Burns a bit hot and there was a bit of dottle and excess moisture (gurgling all the way) that may be more due to me than the tobacco, but it was noted. The flavor profile is very subdued to almost non-existent. Halfway thru the bowl you start to taste the Virginia and it was nice, but not overpowering. The room note is below average and not exciting. The advertising states it is a "highly aromatic" blend and this did not prove to be the case to me, so there went another half a ratings point. I do not think anyone would be offended by you smoking this one all day and it fits the profile of an all-day smoke candidate. Bottom line: 3.5 star aromatic. Will not be in my regular rotation of Top 10 pipe tobaccos and I am not likely to buy it on an ongoing basis. It has some interesting notes and may be worth the try. Pricing is very competitive, and like all Mac Baren tobaccos, the quality is always there.

Purchased: 05 Aug 2020 Opened: 18 Sept 2020 Pipe(s) used: Savinelli 703 KS TREKKER no-name Italian briar, big egg shaped Oom Paul CI did an excellent job for fast handling and shipping on this order. I think is a very good deal for a 3.5oz tin from CI and MacBarens. My judgement: this is a friendly, relaxing smoke on my porch, an enjoyable aromatic I shall buy again. It has a good smooth flavor and the room note is pleasant. Upon opening the tin, there is an enjoyable teasing aroma of dates, and a mild sweet vanilla background nose from the black cavendish. Visually, there are lots of loose cut black ribbons, some golden brown, too. Finger rubbing shows not wet or goopy, the tabak is not sticky with any humectants. It must be plated for 2 to 3 hours, then I work it between my fingers. At this point I can really smell all the aromas that the smoke will deliver. It's easy to do a three part bowl stuffing, and the charring light is wonderful, not harsh as a first burn of the tabak. The re-light is easy and you get the first tastes and smells that this tabak will deliver. After a bit of time, the grassy aroma of the Virginia does appear, just as a friendly hello. Over the five bowls I have smoked, the tabak is getting better and better to smoke with only a mild nic-nose. Gentle puffing is the order of the day, I believe. I enjoy this tabak as a late afternoon porch relaxer. The Fall days here in the mountains show some beautiful foliage, and a beautiful sunset. Life is good. Overall: It's an easy light, even burn, great flavor, and I haven’t experienced any tongue bite or heavy nic-nose. Burns down to a fine grey ash, maybe a little dottle remaining.
