Now I know what you’re thinking, isn’t that a Metallica song? While you would be correct, today we have a little something extra for you. A unique collaboration between some guys you may have heard of who just downright love cigars; Johnathan Drew, James Hetfield (Metallica Co-founder), and Rob Dietrich (Master distiller of BLACKENED American Whiskey). Phenomenal smoke by Drew Estates in collaboration with James Hetfield. I was a bit skittish about a full Maduro smoke, but these are amazing with Maduro filler, binder and wrapper. Smooth draw, burns evenly, and has quite the punch.

So far I haven't been disappointed by any Drew Estate Maduros and this is no exception. Currently my new favorite. Just surpassed the Undercrown 10 Year Anniversary in my book. I haven't even let them sit for a few months in my Humidor yet and they're already packed full of flavor. Heavy smoke output, great draw. Burns and tastes amazing all the way through. If you're skeptical like I was then just go for the 5 pack like I did but know that I regret not buying more.

After seeing James Hetfield smoking these at a Metallica concert in Aug. 2023 and reading some impressive reviews, I decided to give these a try. First I acclimated the cigars for 3 weeks in my humidor kept at 65% & 72º. Before smoking, I will usually let the cigar rest outside of the humidor for no less than 30 minutes, but usually 1 - 2 hours, as time permits. The first time I finally lit one, it is one fine tasting and well constructed cigar. Unfortunately, I am not one of those smokers who can pick out flavors, but I know what I like and I liked this cigar. The only downside, and I am not sure why, as it only affects the M81 cigars, they almost seem to get over-humidified. I notice that once it gets to the second third, it starts to split and the wrapper starts to peel, and then in the final third, it goes out easily and I have to re-light often. Again, I keep my humidor at 65% humidity and no other cigars do this, at least not as consistently. It has been recommended to me to dry box these cigars for 1 - 3 days and see if that helps. I will try that with my next one. Hopefully that helps, because I think if I could get a great burn with no splitting, this cigar has the makings of an all-time fave!

Was so excited to try these when they arrived today, being tied to a great collaborations. However, after lighting up these were just average. The construction was great, draw was good, strength is good, but they lack any real flavor. Maybe it’s just the Maduro wrapper but it’s almost chalky texture smoke plumes. They’re good for the price tag but I probably wouldn’t smoke one again. I’m not overly satisfied after trying these.

I received an M81 in the CoTM shipment, October or November 2023. Being a Drew Estate creation, I was not disappointed. So I ordered a box of the Metallica driven brand to continue enjoying the dark undertones and crisp finish I experienced with the first. Overall, the quality is pretty good, and if you're into maduros you won't be disappointed. Some caveats. The box I received was rather on the dry side, probably due to sitting around in the warehouse, which is not uncommon for a boutique brand with low sales flow. They're sitting in my humidor getting, well...rehumidified, so I expect the state will improve. Of the three I've smoked, one was blocked making it hard to draw, but I powered through and all was okay by the end. I'll decide whether to re-up when I get near the end of this tour.

This stick is in my top 5. Since it came out I’ve bought 8 boxes. Pairs really well with the Blackened whiskey. Full bodied Maduros are my favorite and this stick hits the mark. Papa Het smokes one before every concert. Highly recommend.

These cigars are so good I had to go grab a corn on the cob holder to use as a makeshift nub holder so that I could smoke it all the way to the end. I'm a Drew Estate fan prior to this, as well as Metallica fan. So with the collaboration on this cigar from both it was a must try for me, and man it doesn't disappoint. When I give reviews I try and give more then just the simple 1-2 sentences that tell you simply the liked or didn't like it, I try and give as much info so that others can have a potential starting point to enjoy their smoke time to the fullest. My first pair attempt was with Rumchata straight over ice, I know the obvious choice would be a whiskey, but trust me when I say this pairing is just perfect. The hints of spice from the M81 brought out the cinnamon of the Rumchata, ant then with the hints of chocolate coming into the mixture it enhanced the creamy texture of the Rumchata and also gave it a smooth chocolate milk like taste to boot. Next tried it with Cinnamon Toast drink (Rumchata and Fireball Whiskey shaken and strained), again the pairing was perfect as the spice enhanced the drink. Definitely worth getting a supply on hand when ever possible. While the M81 is best when enjoyed with whiskey, the Rumchata pairing is right there with it. Draw was smooth, burn was even and slow, and smoke was relaxing.
