Alec Bradley Post Embargo

Description

So close, yet so far away.

Although it’s only 90 miles off the Florida coast, Cuba might as well be a whole world away. Alan Rubin, of Alec Bradley cigars, looks hopefully towards the future with Alec Bradley Post Embargo. This new cigar imagines a day when Cuban and non-Cuban brands can compete on a level playing field.

Crafted at the Raices Cubanas factory in Honduras, Post Embargo comes dressed in a Honduran wrapper, 2 binders from Honduras and Nicaragua, and a blend of prime long-fillers from Nicaragua and Honduras. This medium to full-bodied morsel boasts flavors of earth, spice, cocoa, and nuts, with some subtle sweetness at play in the background. Sample the Post Embargo and experience a blend that looks to the future.

The Alec Bradley Post Embargo recently earned a well-deserved '92'-rating. The review noted, "Savory notes of leather and briny olive take on a malty earthiness before a sweet finish redolent of chocolate-covered raisins."

I have had the opportunity to smoke a few Cuban cigars while enjoying this fabulous hobby. The Post Embargo Gordo I smoked, which has been 4 so far, taste very similar to a Cuban Ramon Allones I smoked last year on my 61st birthday. It had a hard draw no matter what I did to improve it. This Alec Bradley cigar is a flavor bomb as the professionals would declare. I have bought a second box already. Burn, taste, and dtaw was absolutely perfect!

Box came on and packed well for delivery. Needed to be aged in the humidor for balance as most boxes do. My test stick had the expected taste for the brand but needed to be relit and touched up often. After a month of aging the second stick was more palatable and more of an even burn.

Where do you start reviewing cigars? With an old classic, with something edgy and new? With grape flavored cigarillos? Well, probably not that last option. Picking a blend to review was a tough choice, but ultimately it came down to one simple answer. Review something that we haven’t reviewed before. And in all of our staff reviews, I could only find a few Alec Bradley blends. There’s our ticket, then.

This is shocking for a few reasons. The first is, as I’m sure many of you know, Alec Bradley consistently releases some of the best cigars on the market. They’ve got a ton of 90+ rated cigars, and we all remember when Prensado won Cigar of the Year. Taking all that out of the equation: I light up Alec Bradley cigars all the time. And if you’ve never met Alan Rubin, the man behind the brand, he’s one of the hardest working men in the cigar industry. This guy’s commitment to bringing his customers a fantastic stick is outstanding. So, let’s correct this right now, and talk about Alec Bradley’s new cigar from 2015, the Post Embargo.

Every name in the cigar biz has a story, and this one’s no different. In short, Rubin welcomes the “challenge” of Cuban cigars entering the market. As he explains is, when reviewers talk about “non-Cubans,” they imply that Nicaraguan, Dominican, and Honduran cigars are somehow worse. In a second class. Now, you and I both know that’s not true, but Rubin throws down the gauntlet. “Try my cigars next to Cuban cigars”, he challenges, and promises you won’t be disappointed.

Let’s move on to breaking down the actual cigar. The band is nice, showing a Cuban flag on the left, and an American flag on the right. The design is intricate without being messy. But, I’m not here to try out the band. The actual cigar features a near-seamless Honduran wrapper, over two binder leaves (one Honduran & one Nicaraguan), and a mixture of fillers from the same countries. The draw and burn are perfect, and the creamy, full bodied flavor of this cigar is awesome down to the nub. There’s a lot of spice and cedar up front, but the core flavor is an earthy sweetness that I think any cigar lover will enjoy.

Don’t take this as a negative: this is not my favorite Alec Bradley cigar. But with 20+ different premium cigars currently in production from AB, I don’t think that’s an insult. Post Embargo is another worthy addition to the Alec Bradley offerings, definitely a highlight of last year’s releases. Grab a 5-pack or treat yourself to a box, and you’ll surely be satisfied.
