Perhaps you may recall Room 101 Daruma, a blend that was based on – of all things – a doll. A Japanese doll that symbolized good luck, specifically. If you haven’t had the pleasure of sampling it, then I suggest you remove your head from beneath the sand and get with the program, because the mix is pure dynamite. But before you do...allow me to introduce you to my new friend Daruma Gold.
Building on the success of its predecessor, Daruma Gold is a medium-bodied experience that focuses on choice leaf selection. The first thing you’ll notice is that the silver artwork has been replaced with – you guessed it – gold! A San Andres Mexican wrapper conceals a Brazilian Mata Fina binder and a fine mix of Honduran and Dominican filler leaves. This delicious blend yields bold notes of coffee, cocoa, spices, and sweet cedar. Overall, the experience is highly enjoyable, so don’t miss it.
Room 101 Daruma received a well-deserved 90-rating noting: "Dark, oily and toothy, this long Churchill warms to deliver meaty, woody flavors, with some hickory and cedar on the finish."
An enjoyable full-bodied cigar. Typical San Andres flavors of cocoa, earth, and smokiness. Not as earthy as some cigars with this wrapper. Nice burn and draw. Lots of smoke. I did feel the flavors disappeared rather early into the final third, taking on in their places a predominantly bready note.

Smoking the Daruma Gold Sucio while listening to Freddie Hubbard in a McDonald's parking lot while waiting for my kid to get out of his trumpet lesson. The cigar is as described above: woody, meaty, and the cocoa is pronounced. Everything is well balanced. Slightest resistance in draw. Good burn. Nice, flavorful finish. Really, a solid 4.5 stars.
