L'Atelier Surrogates

Pete Johnson & crew are at it again.

Introducing the next project from L'Atelier cigars, Surrogates. Blended by Pete Johnson, and crafted in Don Pepin's My Father factory in Nicaragua, each Surrogate was masterfully created to serve up four unique and completely different experiences. This time around, their goal was simple. To create a new series of cigars, limited-edition in nature, that would be readily available to the consumer without breaking the bank. A winning combination if you ask me. Here's the bottom line: Surrogates deliver the goods as promised.

Each blend is easily distinguished by its....errr....'one of a kind' names and bands. I don't know where they came up with these, but they sure make for a good conversation.

Skull Breaker – Full-bodied. Bold notes of cocoa, leather, espresso, and black pepper. Featuring: Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper, Nicaraguan long-fillers.

Bone Crusher – Full-bodied flavor bomb. Robust hints of coffee, earth, leather, and a dash of pepper. Featuring: Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper, Nicaraguan long-fillers.

Tramp Stamp – Medium-bodied and teetering towards medium to full. Layers of cedar, coffee, nutmeg, leather, and a dash of spice. Featuring: Ecuadorian Habano Oscuro wrapper, Nicaraguan long-fillers, and a covered foot.

Crystal Baller – Medium to full-bodied. Notes of natural sweetness, spice, cocoa, cedar, and a toasty finish. Featuring: Ecuadorian Habano wrapper, Nicaraguan long-fillers, and box-pressed finish.

Crystal Baller received a well-deserved 91-rating noting: "Box pressed with a three-seam cap and perfectly tapered shoulders. Sweet flavors of dry cocoa powder, incense and myrrh take on a slight Cavendish tobacco note."

Satin Glove -
Medium to full-bodied. The first under the Surrogates line to use a Mexican San Andres wrapper. A box-pressed churchill with notes of cocoa, pepper, and a spicy-sweet finish.

Satin Glove received a well-deserved 90-rating noting: "Near-black and pressed, this earthy, nutty cigar takes on a bittersweet chocolate note as well as hints of black pepper and oaky vanilla."

Animal Cracker -
Medium to full-bodied with a thick 60-ring gauge vitola. An Ecuadorian Habano Oscuro wrapper gives off a dark chocolate complection. Nicaraguan long-leaves and binder promote nuances of coffee, cherry, and earth with a prominent pepper appearing on the retro-hale.

Cracker Crumbs
 - Animal Cracker's little brother, this medium to full-bodied firecracker uses the same Ecuadorian Habano Oscuro wrapper leaf and the same Nicaraguan long-fillers and binder. A thinner ring gauge results in a slightly stronger, more flavorful experience.

Yum
Only thing out there that compares is the papas Fritas. The cracker crumb is marvelous! I'm smoking them like tic tacs!

Short, but sweet!
Lush delicious smoke, and the perfect size. I'm deployed currently and can rarely sneak out for a 'gar. It would be nice to be able to get outside for a break with a short cigar at all...but this particular short cigar makes each time downright enjoyable. I look forward to my break for more than just getting away from my desk...thanks Pete Johnson!

Pleasantly Surprised
I purchased on a whim and was pleasantly surprised. I'm not a conisur of describing the tastes of cigars, but my smoke was a smooth well blended experience with an even burn and most importantly a pleasant taste and smell with no bad after taste or diminishing returns as I finished.

CRACK!!! er' Crumbs
These little gems are nothing short of amazing. You get the enjoyment of a full size cigar in a small package. If you think this is a quick smoke than your in for a surprise. Cracker Crumbs (Animal Cracker's little brother), is a medium/full bodied cigar that has a nice even burn and is full of flavor. Everyone's taste is different but I would highly recommend these.

Put it in the rotation.
Though it's the lowest rated by CA, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Even burn, no problems. With such a mild start, the flavor really intensified with each pull. Really pleasant aftertaste.

So so
I was a little disappointed. The burn on all 5 cigars was uneven and required frequent touch ups and the flavor wasn't what I was expecting. I'm still glad I tried them. It's all about the adventure. I plan on trying the other surrogates line as well
Customer Testimonials
Tasty after 1st inch, with spice, cocoa, cedar, a bit of fruit flavor building continually until after the middle, it mellows out to a light spicy finish. Enjoyable throughout. REALLY LIKE! Good value too.
The Surrogates Bone Crusher has become one of my favorite cigars. Very well balanced, great flavors and excellent burn. Definitely Pete Johnson and DPG high quality tobaccos and high rolling standards. Very reasonably priced as well for the quality of the stick. I must try the rest, and I will.
By far one of the best full bodied sticks out there. I'm happy to see CI carrying them since they started out as a NHC exclusive. Perfect construction and it burns razor sharp with no touch ups. The Bone crusher is the strongest of the bunch with heavy notes of earth, leather and espresso. It's starts out with a strong spiciness that gradually mellows out to an awesome cigar. Pick these up and you won't be disappointed!
