Telling the Genesis story with just two paragraphs - or even three - is extremely difficult. Not to mention, it can’t possibly come close to doing the cigar and its creator justice. Genesis deserves pages of praise, but catalog pages cost a whole lot of money, so our space here is limited. That said, here’s the skinny.
Genesis is a small-batch super-premium, meticulously hand-crafted by Ramon Bueso in Honduras. Who is Ramon Bueso? Trust me when I tell you he isn’t some ho-hum street corner vendor. Quite the opposite, in fact, Ramon has been an integral player in the cigar industry for nearly 4 decades. Since 1977, Ramon has been honing his mastery of cigars and has perfected every facet of cigar production. From grower to roller to master-blender to factory supervisor. Early in his career, Ramon Bueso was vital in catapulting the legendary Villazon factory to new heights, working alongside cigar legends Frank Llaneza and Estelo Padron, and producing some of the world’s biggest and most successful blends in the process. Blends you enjoy early and often, from the likes of Hoyo de Monterrey, Excalibur, Punch, and so much more.
Truth is, Ramon’s mind and hands have created more brands and blends than one can accurately count, let alone imagine. But this....this is by far his most irresistible creation yet. His raison d’etre, if you will. Genesis began as ‘The Project,’ a limited production, local favorite exclusive to the Honduran market, mostly used for gifts and events. Now available on a grander scale, the Genesis is ready to make its mark. The lush, well-aged tobaccos used to craft Genesis deliver a scrumptious and complex medium to full-bodied bouquet. An exceedingly complex core of vintage long-fillers from Nicaragua and Honduras, including select ligeros, visos, and secos. This complex recipe is expertly blended, secured inside a feisty Jamastran binder, then cloaked by a dark and inviting, triple-fermented Connecticut Broadleaf maduro wrapper boasting gorgeous oils. “I have to say, I was apprehensive because of the name of this cigar, a name which seems a bit silly to me. However, I took a chance on a fiver on a Jambalaya, and before receiving that five pack, grew more and more convinced I might miss out on a good deal if I didn't grab a box at prices lower than we usually see for similar-sounding cigars. Glad I did so. I took some tasting notes before re-reading the CI write-up. What I got was a cigar that is still fairly young, but good already. Dominate flavor of unsweetened espresso, with more subdued undertones of bittersweet chocolate, wood, earth and black pepper. The flavor profile didn't evolve much, but I didn't mind, as it was already quite tasty to begin with. Already impressive flavor, med-full and with an assertive flavor profile, I believe these cigars will smooth out a bit without losing much strength and age very nicely.”

“Split a box with a BOTL 2,000 miles away. He sent me my 10. Somehow they seemed to multiply in my humi box. I smoke my premium stogies sparingly, but even then there always seemed to be couple in the bottom of my box. I sent one or two to my CiL and he said it was the best cigar I have ever given/traded with him. Before I knew it, he called CI and ordered a box, and got the freebie sampler with it, sending me two different sizes to try. These age well, and don't get bitter except in the last inch or so of a nub, as long as you don't rush the smoke. One of the better/best cigars I have had in 2012.”

I've been looking for a replacement ever since, and I think the Genesis is it! Nice dark oily wrapper. A bit tighter in the wrap than I'm used to, but it just made me sip and enjoy.... Only needed one touchup down to my nearly-burned fingers, and no harshness even smoked down that far, just an enjoyable numbness that went with the smile on my face! “What a great new stick this is, by a guy who's been working in near anonymity for decades. The wrapper on this one glistens with oils. The first third starts out with some nice pepper. Nothing overwhelming, but definitely enough to make you take notice. After that, the pepper calms down and it morphs into leather and earth, continuing on to a smooth finish. “I first bought the Robusto size of this cigar and was blown away by it. I tried to get another box a week later, but they were backordered, so I got the Torpedo size instead. I have to say that I am not as impressed. It just doesn't have quite the complexity of the Robusto. That makes me sad because I would have liked a longer running version. Don't get me wrong it is still great but I liked the 'Busto better. I will try the longer Toro next when they are available. Amazing cigar!!”

“wow. first impressions matter, and this cigar is beautiful. The thick, dark, oily wrapper with a simple elegant band makes you want to like it, and I did. First third is a bit peppery, middle settles down to rich coffee, earth and perhaps even a bit of chocolate. rich and medium-full in body but smooth. I agree with some others that the draw is a bit firm but not a problem for me. just noting in case that is a critical factor for you.”

“I received one of these in the "Twelve Days of Christmas" sampler. I remember thinking "what a goofy name for a cigar!" Then I smoked it, and I've bought two boxes of the Robustos since. Flawlessly constructed with an oily, dark wrapper, these burn like a dream. I'd put them firmly in the medium bodied, medium flavor range. This cigar has complex flavors from the time you toast the foot until you nub it. It's a tastier cigar than many I've smoked at twice the price. If you're on the fence about these, hop off it and try one. At this price point I don't think you can find a tastier smoke.”

This is the question I heard over and over (and over) throughout CIGARfest 2012. Indeed, aside from us hosting our 9th annual CIGARfest, which turned out to be a huge success for 6,000+ cigar lunatics, Ramon Bueso was the buzz word of the day, every day, between May 2nd and May 6th. So who is Ramon Bueso? Lemme fill you in with some back story.
The first tobacco farm in Honduras was located on Ramon's family's land. It was here where Ramon was first introduced to tobacco and the premium cigar industry. His passion grew, and he became a roller at the young age of 15, only to evolve into an instrumental voice and mind inside the mighty Villazon factory – the original, Honduran-based home of legendary brands such as Punch, Hoyo de Monterrey, and Excalibur....to name a few. He worked alongside Estelo Padron, Benji Menendez, and Frank Llaneza – some of the most powerful and influential men in the business. To put it simply, Ramon Bueso has been crafting, creating, and perfecting some of the industry’s biggest and best-known cigars for nearly 40 years, including many of the cigars you've likely had and enjoyed.
Back to CIGARfest 2012. The official launch of Ramon’s first full release, Genesis The Project. 6,000 faithful enthusiasts from the CI Nation were introduced to both Ramon and his creative genius, thanks to an aggressive approach and successful execution. What began as an unknown became one of the most talked about – and often raved about – cigars of the weekend, catching countless attendees by surprise, pleasantly. Many had a chance to sample the cigar before the main events, and the commentary was exciting, to say the least. In a nutshell and without warning, Ramon Bueso and Genesis The Project took CIGARfest by storm.
I’ll be honest with you. I am not writing a review here. I was lucky enough to receive a few dozen Genesis cigars throughout the event, and not one went to waste. No matter how many cigars I burned throughout the 5 days of madness – and trust me, I burned a ton – I found myself craving more of this cigar. My reason for this ‘Staff Review’ is not to give you my tasting notes on the cigar, but to urge you to get acquainted with it. Stars are born in this industry daily, and stars fade even faster. But Ramon is no star, nor does he want to be. He’s simply a simple cigar-maker with a tremendous level of tobacco knowledge and experience, and an innate ability to utilize this knowledge and experience through crafting a delicious, top-notch cigar.
Although simple, we cigar enthusiasts are a frugal, finicky bunch. We love cigars, but we have developed our preferred tastes, and always seek the best, new cigar to fit our needs at a price that fits our budget. We are rarely content with the norm. We are always looking to expand. It’s a never-ending circle of cigar-frenzied, smoke-filled madness, but the rewards are oh-so-sweet.
