Alec Bradley Harvest Selection '97

A fine follow-up to Alec Bradley's top-selling duo of Trilogy and Maxx.

Fresh off a '94' rating, Alec Bradley cigars are on the move....and for its next trick, we proudly introduce Alec Bradley Harvest Selection '97. The Harvest Selection '97 is a supremely appealing cigar from the get-go, thanks to a super-smooth Nicaraguan Habano wrapper with ample oils and a leathery texture. Underneath, a flavorful 3-country blend of aged long-fillers unites, including Dominican Piloto Cubano from 1997, Mexican ligero from 1997, and Nicaraguan Criollo from 1998. This vintage, yet complex recipe serves up an eventful, medium-bodied bouquet layered with smooth, toasty flavors, subtle spices, earth, and coffee-like undertones. Tasty, and enjoyable down to the nub. Better still, my monstrous everyday price....highly reasonable brother, highly reasonable.

Customer Reviews of “Alec Bradley Harvest Selection '97”
“I'm well into my second box (Alec Bradley Harvest Selection '97) this toasty, tasty bad boy. More medium than full, but when it kicks in with that "hotcha!" pepper note about half way through, this stick is no wimp. I was looking for something that wouldn't insult my RyJ Habana Reserves and other faves in the sweatbox, and this baby is it!”
JN of Kirkland, WA
“Picked up the toro on a Joe Cigar deal, almost as an afterthought on a recent cigar order, and they've just been laying around in my humidor. Wanting something different, I grabbed one and fired it up...and what a mistake I've made by not trying one out sooner...there's nothing second-rate about this cigar. The smoke is thick and creamy, on the full side of medium, smooth and leathery with a hint of spice, enough to keep things interesting...a great change of pace from the spicier cigars I usually go for. Top-notch construction...great draw and ash...a beauty to behold and to smoke. AB has another winner owe it to yourself to give this cigar a shot.”
DB of Winston-Salem, NC
“Very Good Cigar- Gets an "8" on the 1-10 scale. Good burn with a great after taste. Definitely worth a try.”
RH of Coraopolis, PA
“This is quite a nice, medium-bodied cigar (Alec Bradley Harvest Selection '97). Excellent construction, slightly tight draw and a burn that required only very little attention. Pleasant 'earthy' flavour. Must smoke more of these before they're gone.”
MC of M Leesburg, VA
“I bought the 5 pack of Harvest selection in the robusto size, I like t try different cigars and I have to say this was a very enjoyable smoke from the start. Even burn all the way through. At times almost a full bodied will get more of these in the future.”
DS of West Memphis, AR
“I just broke out a box of these, i bought 3 , i believe 2 years ago, I smoked a few back then and was very disappointed, I though the tobacco was overly floral, and young tasting . just seemed grassy and leafy over all. well, i have burned through a box of the robusto in the last week, This is remarkable, The turn around in flavor, gone is the grassy flavor, only a slight floral element is left, plenty of coffee and spice flavor. they burn very slow and and hold the ash well past the half way point. The thing that sticks in my mind is a perfect balance of coffee and spice, with just that hint of floral aroma .solid medium body. with a very long finish, that kick up to near full body at the nub. not a harsh note any where. things were late bloomers, worth the wait.”
JS of West Carrollton, OH
“I bought the Churchills. Alec Bradley Harvest Selection '97 Good looking. Nice feel. Good draw. Even burn. Smoked it all the way down to a thumb and index finger stub! ”
JK of Chatham, IL
“I liked it. Appearance was very good, well constructed and firm. Pre light draw was clean with a toasty flavor. Burned even the whole length, volumes of thick smoke, tasty, medium bodied and it is on the list for repurchase”
MM of Seal Harbor, ME
“I had heard of Alec Bradley cigars but have never had the pleasure of lighting one up. CI latest offer was too good to resist I chose the Vintage 97 Double Toro 6 X 54.I have to say it is one of the best cigars I have ever smoked for the price. Quality through out even burn extremely long ash smoked the first one all the way down until I could not hold it any more and it only tasted better as I smoked it. This is a must buy if you like a medium body cigar with flavor.”
JP of Stony Point, NY
“Nice smooth smoke, great aroma, my wife loves when I light one up.”
S of BNorton, MA
“I just received a box of churchills yesterday, had one last night, and loved it! These cigars are definitely worth the price; a premium cigar, at an everday price. The spices were subtle, very earthy, and hints of coffee made this cigar smooth and tasty. A sure treat that will delite!”
MK of Milwaukee, WI
“I tried the robusto style of this cigar and it did not let me down.Alec Bradley Harvest Selection '97 It is an extremely good medium bodied cigar, very toasty, and slightly spicy. I liked the fact that the spiced flavor did not overwhelm the cigar and allowed the earthiness to come through. It had a very smooth finish. I enjoyed them!”
MK of Milwaukee, WI
“I just finished my box (Alec Bradley Harvest Selection '97) and that makes me sad. There are tons of cigars that I would like to try but I'm tempted to buy another box of these AB 97 harvest. This cigar is very consistent even right out of the box but it does get better after being in the humidor for a few months. The burn, construction, and draw are perfect. The flavor is strong and mild at the same time, if that makes any sense. I can't say enough about this cigar...I'm going to buy another box.”
MR of Santa Clarita, CA
“Bought the sampler pack (Alec Bradley Harvest Selection '97) and can definitely say I will be buying a box of these in the very near future. This is a great medium bodied cigar with a very nice even burn all the way down. Its got a bit of a slow draw, but I believe this will improve once they've sat in my humidor for a few months. I would recommend this cigar to anyone that enjoys a nice medium bodied stogie.”
FG of Portage, IN
“Nice draw. Even burn requiring no attention. Excellent medium flavors. I would pay full price for these... its especially nice that i dont have to!”
BH of Princeton, NJ
“Outstanding smoke in all categories including price.”
KG of Acton, ME
“I will start with WOW!!! Now that that is out of the way, I will go on to say that at first I thought I was going to light up a not so impressive cigar, but was I wrong. I guess the sight of the smoke is what first made me think it was not going to impress. The wrapper was veiny and looked to be not well aged, but that left me with the thought of don’t judge a book by its cover. It smoked like a great cigar, nice draw solid ash and a cool refreshing flavor. I though as I smoked it, “this is what cigar should taste like.” Each draw was a lesson in taste, it had a sweet earthy taste similar to a great cup of coffee and then left a nice woody taste in my mouth when I was done. I don’t know how they sell these so cheap. But thank God they do.”
DF of De Queen, AR
“Ok I admit I picked these up on an impulse when placing my last order with CI. They have only been sitting in my humidor for about 3 days but I've been drawn to them since they arrived. I finally broke down this morning and smoked one standing on my covered patio while it was raining cats and dogs. My only regret is that I didn't order more of these fiesty little sticks. Once I clear some room in my humidor I will defineatly buy a box, but possibly in the toro size so i can smoke it a little longer than the robusto. Highly recomended!!!”
AS of Danbury, CT
“I recieved a 8-pack sampler of these(Alec Bradley Harvest Selection '97) a couple of days ago. I have now burned about 4 of them. I believe this is a perfect medium body cigar. All of the ones I have smoked were very much the same. The construction is great, draw is very good right from the start. The burn never varied on any that I have smoked so far, perfect all the way to the nub. It has a nice toasty aftertaste, with a slight peppery note, and just enough spice. A really nice smoke that I expect will age nicely and just get better. And at this price, hard to beat.”
RK of San Clemente, CA
“The Alec Bradley Harvest Selection 97 "ended up" being a tasty little bugger. I will have to go on record though saying that it started off tasting a little green or fresh. I understand that the long fillers used are from 97 and a fresh tobacco taste was far from what I was expecting, but it was overwhelming (almost mildew-like.) It did get progressively better and from about the band point on it took on an incredible new taste profile...a taste comparable to what I remember the Ashton ESG was like. I smoked that thing until there was nothing left!”
KC of Kaneohe, HI
“I had never smoked anything from AB. My boss gave me a Double Toro to try over the weekend and I am totally sold! It was very very smooth all the way to the end! These will definitely be taking up space in my humidor. Man, it was good!”
TH of Oklahoma City, OK
“Wow, I was turned on to these by a friend from work who said I couldn't go wrong with these. Man was he right. Flavorful to the finish. He also gave me one of the habano 97's, can't wait to try it.”
JM of Waxahachie, TX
“WOW!!!! What a great med. body smoke.Tons of sweet flavors nuts, sweet wood and creamy coffee!!Great price A.B is a winner!!”
MK of moulton, AL
“These are just excellent. Perfect draw, perfect burn and above all an absolutely great flavor. Well worth the money plus some!”
CS of Rock Springs, WY
“An amazing smoke. I bought a box of these when CI did the special. It is by far one of the best everyday smokes I have had. I agree with just about every post above in that it is fantastic. I do have one down fall to this great cigar. I have a box of 20 and am about half way through it and everyone of them had the wrapper fall apart on me. I am an avid smoker and have multiple well kept humidors so I am not sure why this happened. This will not keep me from buying another box or recommending them to everyone. Great job AB.”
FM of New Bern, NC
“I must have gotten a stinker. The smoke was bitter and had a strange aftertaste. No, it wasn't moldy. Maybe not representative of the product? I will try another...”
MS of Bethlehem, PA
“Can't say enough about this amazing cigar. This company is just geting better and better. Whatever you're doing my friend, keep on trucking. This cigar has a classic taste in my opinion. Similar even to his American classic but with more unique flavors then the American Miami knock off. The American tastes no mor then a "cigar" to me if you know what I mean. It simply tastes like good burning tobaco. I like this cigar for every reason a cigar should be appreciated. The burn, draw and flavors are a win win win.”
JL of Middle Village, NY
“MS of Bethlehem, PA, it may depend on when you purchased it, as this format does not show when your review was done. Looking at Alec Bradley's site, it appears that they no longer make the cigar. I have heard that in some cases the cigar name is sold and manufacturers with less quality control then make them as though it were the original company. Since the stick is no longer listed on the Bradley site, I'd at least wonder about that possibility.”
“Nice flavor, but unlike other reviews, the burn was very uneven. It tunneled on draw and required a relight 3 times.”
RS of San Jose, CA
“I've been smoking these for years. Undoubtably my go to smoke and always the lowest prices at CI”

Alec Bradley Harvest Selection '97

Posted by Keith

Alan Rubin, maker of Alec Bradley cigars, seems to have hit full stride recently. His newer releases have each been impressive – well-executed and well-received. Alec Bradley Tempus, released last year, earned a sporty 94 rating while Alec Bradley Maxx remains strong, and newer, promising blends loom on the horizon such as the tasty Alec Bradley ‘SCR’ (set to be released later in 2009). But one of his biggest hits has been the Alec Bradley Harvest Selection ’97….a blend received so well that it’s going to be complemented by a new blend, Harvest Selection Habano: a fuller, heavier foil to the medium-bodied ‘97.

Enough dilly-dallying, let me get to the review. Alec Bradley Harvest Selection ’97 is a small-production, Honduran made gem made with vintage tobaccos including a pristine Nicaraguan-grown, Habano-seed wrapper. This wrapper leaf is gorgeous: smooth, even, chestnut-brown and loaded with natural oils. The filler blend is a savory 3-country blend of authentic, vintage long-fillers: Dominican Piloto Cubano (1997), Mexican ligero (1997), and Nicaraguan Criollo (1998). Each stick is dense, well packed and very well-constructed. After rolling, the final sticks are nestled away in heavy cedar chests for in the aging rooms.

The first few puffs are mellow and somewhat uneventful. But once the burn reaches full-force a ½” or so in, the flavor explodes like Ike Turner on a bender. It manages to remain smooth to the bone but begins to unload with rich, hearty nuances….complex and really meaty with notes of earth, pepper, cedar, leather and a twangy Cuban-esque tobacco core. After an inch or so, the flavor settles perfectly. The smoke becomes noticeably thick and creamy with a touch of sweetness added into the mix. Its balance of warm, natural flavors never wavers until the final puff. I’d guess that without the age on the filler tobaccos, Harvest Selection ’97 would be a powerhouse. But the age has done wonders in balancing the cigar while also maintaining maximum flavor in this smooth, medium-bodied smoke.

Harvest Selection ’97 is a complex, slow-burning stick with pure tobacco taste. But it gets extra credit for also having a reasonable price point.
