This Hoyo brings the brass.

Hoyo de Monterrey has long been one of the world's best-known, highest quality brands. Its legion of fans spreads across the world, covering every size and stripe of enthusiasts under the sun. Now, this legion has a full-bodied treat to savor in Excalibur Legend. Dressed in a dark and leathery Connecticut Havana wrapper, the Legend embraces an exceedingly flavorful mixture of Nicaraguan and Dominican ligero combined with robust long-fillers from the volcanic island of Ometepe, Nicaragua. Together, these powerful tobaccos marry to produce a bold, spicy cigar with rich, chewy flavors and a long and satisfying aftertaste. Complex notes of oak and leather smack the palate with each puff, leaving behind a nice dose of pepper that complements the smooth finish quite nicely. Excalibur fans, your full-bodied, full-flavored treat has arrived!

Excalibur Legend received a well-deserved 91-point rating, noting: “This thick cigar is rich with leather from the the first puff, developing to show tea and toast flavors. A balanced smoke with a profoundly leathery core.”

“First of all, let me admit that I didn't buy this thing from CI...shame on me...but I'm a moral coward. I just don't feel right about going into a wee 'brick and mortar' shop and not buy something. And that's what happened today. There was nothing in the shop that I really wanted or didn't already have (doubtless bought from CI!) except the Excaliber Legend. In fact, it came in a nifty wee wooden box of three for about $15. I smoked the Corona size one and it's really a good cigar: plenty of strength but not at all harsh, well-made, slightly tight draw which only made it smoke quite slowly, very good flavour and an even burn. This is another Excaliber that's well worth buying, and I see that CI has them at a very good price. Try 'em...”

“A welcome new cigar (Excalibur Legend) in the Excalibur line. Full of spice with some leather and tea flavors. Medium to Full bodied with a beautiful wrapper and solid construction. Not a cigar for people who like simple, uniform smoke, it has a bold, exotic flavor profile that evolves as you smoke it.”

“Hey C.I. Excalibur Legend is an awesome cigar.i smoke a lot of different cigars but this(legend)is a delightful and refreshing change of pace-not your average full-bodied,full-flavored stick. They're onto something with the addition of these rich Ometepe tobaccos! They(legends) have a rich evolving taste kind of like slight hints of syrup or molasses, charcoal, cream and pepper all having a party on the tongue and palate.I must admit,I bought a handfull from a local shop at an offer I couldn't refuse but you can best believe I will be getting the rest form C.I.”

“Excalibur Legend (Challenger) Just got this cigar from the Cigar of the Month Club.  There is a surprising slightly sweet smell to this cigar right out of the wrapper.  Post-cut, there is a fine degree of pepper on the tongue.  From first puff, there is a smooth, leathery smoke.  The cigar generally gives a nice even burn.  The flavors blend together very well toward mid-cigar, adding a hint of woodiness.  At the  nub, the cigar becomes nice and chewy, adding notes of toast.  Overall, an impressive smoke.”
DL of Alamogordo, NM
“A rather bland, woody-tasting cigar consisting of a one-dimensional, mild flavor and strength with a weak amount of smoke. It did impart some zing to the tip of my tongue and roof of mouth and exhibited a short finish but, otherwise . . . boring.”
MK of Weed, CA
“Peppery on the tongue and slightly spicy smoke. Good flavor with that leather taste that they're always talking about. Very dark but smoothing out in the middle... Smoothing way out. I think I would die if I smoked this after a rich or spicy meal. Better for espresso or a not so sweet liquor as I'm no bourbon/scotch drinker. It leaves a spicy aftertaste in the mouth but like after good wings, I don't feel the need to put the fire out.”

Excalibur Legend

The new Excalibur Legend blend is a welcome addition from the Villazon factory. This Danli, Honduras-based factory produces some truly delicious blends with bold and zesty flavor profiles....Dark Knight, Punch Gran Puro, Prensado Oscuro, Hoyo Dark Sumatra to name a few. Funny how just a decade ago even regular Punch and regular Hoyo de Monterrey were considered among the standards for full-bodied blends. Today, they’re often regarded as mild to medium at best, a fact owing to palates evolving and the steady introduction in recent years of ever stronger, ever fuller, ever richer cigars. Exhibit A is this, the 2008 introduction of Excalibur Legend, a shining example of complexity and richness.

For starters, it’s covered in a beautiful, first class Colorado-colored wrapper. This leaf is Havana seed Connecticut broadleaf, oily and smooth with some slight tooth and the aforementioned glorious, dark reddish color that practically glistens. The filler blend is Dominican ligero combined with tobaccos grown on the volcanic soil of Ometepe – the virtually untouched sections of an island located in massive Lake Nicaragua a few hours drive from the cigar capital of Esteli. Talk about terroir. Excalibur Legend reflects the land and climate from which these tobaccos are harvested as much as any. Expect to see more cigars in the near future composed of Ometepe tobaccos, thanks to its one-of-a-kind, intense, searing and rich flavor. Upon first light, Excalibur Legend offers pronounced spice – in fact it’s chock full of spice – yet despite that she remains well-balanced with a chewy character, leathery aroma, rich aftertaste and long, lingering finish. Strength-wise is on the high side of medium with one foot in the full-bodied camp. Of the handful of Excalibur Legends I’ve sampled in recent weeks, I find the draw to be a tad too firm. I prefer some resistance but here had to struggle a bit and needed to touch it up on a few occasions throughout. This is the one reservation I have about this otherwise solid handmade from Honduras.
