Rocky Patel Cargo

Rocky Patel Cargo at must-go prices.

Never heard of Cargo? Understandable, only Central America has released more brands than Rocky Patel since 2005. Here's the skinny. Despite Rocky Patel Cargo's modest appearance, this medium-bodied blend delivers full-flavored goodness in spades. Nicaraguan tobaccos are carefully combined Cuban sandwich-style, then hugged by dark and oily Ecuadorian-grown Connecticut wrappers to produce a rich and creamy bouquet. Earth, sweet cedar, leather, and espresso bean linger on the palate just before a sweet series of gentle spices completes each puff.

I thought I had put up a review of these, but maybe it was only on the banter. This is based on only a couple of the toro grande, and one of the toros. Both of the first, had a nice white pepper undertaste which continued all throughout the cigar that helped keep my interest. Both were nicely rolled, no burn issues, the draw was easy with lots of smoke volume, but with a lightness to it ... because it is mixed filler, it did not hold the ash for long, but that was no problem with me, just keep it in the ashtray and tap it. The first one I used a guillotine cutter, and had only started having problems with getting clippings/loose tobacco in my mouth after 4 inches were gone ... no big deal. The second one, I used a punch and it performed flawlessly. I don't like real spicy cigars, so as I said, the toro grande is mild to medium with just enough spice to keep things interesting. Really liked the cigar for it's price and performance, very much unlike any other RP I've had (somewhere I saw a write up which said they use the clippings/leftover tobacco from the 15th Anniversary cigar for this. The one toro that I've had performed well but was so mild I barely tasted anything ... now this is only one cigar and that was straight off the truck without any humi time. I doubt that it would change much, but I could be wrong. I am surprised that the toro would differ at all in flavor from the toro grande. Again, both sizes performed well, having excellent construction, in my limited experience with them.

Last night I had my third RP Cargo toro grande ... the first two had a very easy draw, had a light white pepper taste on the tongue which made them interesting and made me wonder what cigar the tobacco came from ... I saw in one description that the tobacco was clippings from the 15th Decade ... The first one I clipped and it held together well but after 4 inches the bits of tobacco started coming out in my mouth, so the second one I punched and had no loose tobacco at all ... very good smoke and draw ... the one I had last night did start unraveling/flaking about half way through which was annoying, but still I continued to like the smoke ... mild to medium. I don't know why, but the single toro size I've had did not seem to have the strength, the toro grande has had ... was very mild.

I feel blessed to have got a box of these for a real bargain $39:99. After ordering them I was reading some mixed reviews on other sites and was wondering how these were going to turn out to be. Well I need not have worried, just as all of Rocky's other fine offerings these were no disapointment. Right from the doorstep I eagerly opened the box and disapeared outside with my cutter, lighter and cigar. I had read there some mixed fillers in amongst the long filler in these cigars, so I was carefull when clipping the end to only clip it about half of the diameter. This cigar lit easily, had a nice easy draw, burnt perfectly for about 45 minutes of tasty pleasure. Rocky scores again, these are a fine cigar especially for the price I paid. As a bonus the box is pretty neat as well.

Well I recently tried a Cargo cigar, its was actually pretty good. It's not a cigar I would pass out for black tie affair, but its great for the golf course, poker game, or Friday night party. This is a great middle of the road cigar that I will always have on stand by in my humidor. I do suggest that you use a punch instead of a cutter, they seem to mess up a bit with a cutter but this may just have been me or my cutter.

I got real lucky and picked up 40 Toro's for $39.95. All I can say is wish I had bought 80. I smoked the last one the other day and now sniff, sniff gone too soon.....

At this price it's really not fair to complain about the quality or lack thereof of this cigar. As suggested, punch, don't cut. Otherwise you'll get a mouthful of tobacco clippings. There isn't much to say about the flavor profile because there really isn't one. A low end cigar that reaps the benefits of having the name RP behind it. In my opinion there are a lot better low end smokes out there that blow this one away.
I love Rocky Patel cigars, but I'm not a fan of the Cargo line, at least not the torpedo size that I bought. The problem I had was the draw. The first one was acceptable, but the next 2 or 3 had to be chunked. I decided to give them some time in the humidor, but that did not help. I finally figured out that cutting it just below the label helped on some of them. Out of my bundle of 20, I would say that maybe 10 were good without intervention, 5 were salvageable, and 5 were thrown out within a few minutes. Sorry Rocky, I hate it as much as you do.
Don't waste your money!! I am disappointed every time I attempt to smoke one of these for the box I bought. Problems range from uneven burning, draw extremely hard, will not stay lit, and taste nasty, I have tried using a V cut, punch cut, and regular cut and have had them in my humidor for a couple weeks, hoping that would help. I am a huge Rocky Patel fan, but hope they are ashamed of putting their name and reputation on these.
I got a 5-pack in toro size for almost nothing (guess where). I was pleasantly surprised. The draw and burn were both perfect (I used a punch instead of cutter). The flavor was very similar to the Alec Bradley American Sun Grown. Kinda woody with nothing objectionable but nothing that really stands out. I was expecting this cigar to bust apart or do something weird since it's mixed filler but nothing like that happened. in fact, I smoked it down to the nub, which is rare for me even with much spendier cigars.
These are great. I'm about half way through my first mazo, and I getting ready to order two more. No draw or burn issues, has aged well (I put them in the fridge-a-dor and accidentally forgot about them for three months), and taste pretty good. I like to smoke these while I am driving my truck and cannot devote complete attention to smoking. Never had a single cutting issue...just clip and light. Good tasty cheap stick.
Not your typical Rocky Patel but a great daily smoke. I purchased 2 mazo's (40 Churchills) on sale and they burned well, had a great draw and were more on the mild side than medium strength; somewhere in between. I would buy them again at $30/mazo. Strongly recommend that the cigars be punched rather than cut since the tobacco is loosely wrapped which makes for a great draw but also can produce a mouth full of clipping. A solid "B-" which isn't bad at all for the money.

Toro Habano - few weeks in the box and I have enjoyed it to the nub. Came to post a review and did not experience any of the problems posted. I clipped the end, and had NO problems with wrapper, bits or draw. Maybe because of the Habano or maybe the humi ... Just ordered a mazo of these and will post again in a few weeks.

OK Y'all its been about a month...26 days.. And I'm back with a another report on these good tasting stogies. habano toro.. I have previously read ...bits in your mouth ...wrapper or other problems.. Shared one with a friend last night and neither stick had such problems. Yes this is a Cuban sandwich cigar but I have many in my box made this way including Perdomo... PI.. SOSA and other premiums. If you want the flavor of a expensive stick without the expense " This is one for you" . this cigar starts off with a nice spice or light pepper moving towards a creamy sweetness while holding onto the spice. Never a lingering aftertaste but a solid finish with every puff. A must as a everyday yargar or for those of you that want an affordable, flavorful experience. This is still one I will keep in my box.

Another few week in the humi and it just keeps getting better... Don't want to rave on, just came to say... " It's a no brainer" I just ordered some more and will keep these new bundles in my big box for later. Truly a premium flavor without breaking the bank. As for the few complaints I've read... Well I smoked a Cao Flathead...Perdomo Noir...and an edge in the last week that gave me a few bits towards the end, but none of the were as affordable as these with as much flavor. Thanks again CI

Not a great cigar, certainly not up to RP standard, hence the cheap price....
These things are my favorite smoke yet. They taste great, smell good and draw easily. CI has Cargo as a "must go" or clearance/closeout all the time, but I'm hoping they keep hanging around.

Just an irrating cigar ! Dosen't smoke properly and has no flavor ! if you want an inexpensive cigar that delivers decent burn and flavor I suggest the Black OPs . Consistantly good and a great smoke for the money !
Eh, not impressed. I was gifted a couple of these by a buddy, glad I didn't pay for them. I mean, they're not terrible but to me they're not great either. Now I suppose I'm a little skewed because I normally go for FULL cigars so of course the flavor wasn't what I really wanted but this just didn't impress me at all. I mean it's a cigar but nothing to write home about. I guess if you're walking the golf course & looking for something to burn that you won't care if you have to toss then this isn't too bad.
great cigar for the money its nice smooth taste to it not bad for a 30-45 min cigar when im on computer or even out for a drive in my van i even watch my favoite shows ive smoked 38 of them have 2 left i would hand them out to friends and i will buy again

This was a much better cigar than I had anticipated! Sometimes when you buy a "bargain" stogie, that's just what you get. This gem was not like that at all. For the price, this was a really tasty cigar. It only covered around 5 holes out on the course, so you better pack a couple to get through all 18. Happy smoking!

I don't normally write reviews, but feel compelled to on this one. I tried because I am a fan of the Rocky Patel and was very interested in seeing if a cigar of this price would be good. I am impressed! I bought a punch based on the reviews I read and have used it on each cigar I smoked. Each one I have smoked has been a very pleasant experience. I have had none of the negative things people have complained about. While this is not my favorite cigar, it is definitely one I will keep in my humidor. It smokes like a much more expensive cigar. It is a very good smoke and at this price, I don't see how it can be beat.

There is a hint of flavor, but the tight draw is not worth the effort. I am always on the search for a good bargain cigar - these are not my taste.
Not too happy with these. Smoke fast and taste like a camp fire. Even after 2 weeks in the humidor.

Always liked RP, not too keen on Edge, love series 92 and 90. No long filler, so really small cut off cap. For $1 each, was not planning on liking this. RP in a Cuban sandwich with cigar clippings? Didn't need to worry. This has turned out to be one of my favorite everyday cigars.... I can live off these...waiting for another sale. Must stock up, my humidor can hold it. For those who haven't tried this, do yourself a flavor. Pun intended. Delicious flavor, not a harsh bite, didn't taste as peppery as I'd feared. Medium body, not too heavy. Good for morning coffee to eod. Best all around cigar to date. Thanks for the intro, guys.

Awesome daily smoke! Got the Robusto on sale for $25 and couldn't be happier! Great price for a good cigar! Not the greatest I ever had but flavorful easy draw and no burn issues. I have smoked 10 of them so far so maybe I will have some of the issues mentioned but so far none.

When I received them, the cigars had a pleasant smell and were well constructed. When I lit it up, immediately it had a pleasant smell and taste. The burn throughout the smoke was very even and had an excellent draw. The flavor changed about 3 times during the cigar but each flavor had pleasant tastes. I'd say they fit into a medium flavor category. Good rich flavor but not intense at all. I smoked it all the way to the end and it was still providing a consistent draw, burn, and taste. I've just finished my last one and can honestly say this is one of the better cigars I have ever smoked and at a hell of a bargain. Overall, I'd say this is an excellent cigar, not surprising since it's made by Rocky Patel and will most definitely be smoking more of them soon and will buy again in the future.

I smoke about 3 cigars when playing golf 4 times per week. Thus I look for the deals. And for $2 per stick I have not found anything better. I love the RP Cargo.
I've bought in the hundreds by now and have only had 1/2 dozen that were a problem. Then it was a thin wrapper and I continued to smoke until the binder came apart. A great everyday walking my dog and morning coffee smoke.

I bought a bundle for cold weather smokes. I've done it before with other brands and have learned you get what you pay for. These were a bit "harsh" for what is described as a medium cigar. Normally love the RP brand, especially a Decade with a nice scotch. I dumped half the Cargo's for taste, burn and overall quality. I'm done with economy cigars. If I want one or two a month in the winter, I'd rather keep a few good ones in the humidor. Just personal preference.
I've bought these a bunch of times and have never been disappointed. You really can't beat them for the price. I compare them to Garo Double Habano or Maduro and Arganese Maduro. Great smokes for a couple of bucks per stick.
Pretty new stick smoker here and I ordered the Cargos to try and I can't get enough of them. Just ordered 20 more of the Churchills. I know they are backordered, but I don't care. Well worth the wait. I just hope they have more at a later date. Thanks CI.

Picked up a mazo of these for cheap on a CI special. Wish I'd bought more. They are actually a good smoke - and better than some high-priced "premium" cigars. They are consistent in burn and flavor - the last third is the best. You can smoke 'em all the way to the end.
Never been disappointed with any RP before now. I gave Cargo three chances and each attempt provided a smoke that was very difficult to draw, hard to keep lit, with little taste. I am giving the remainder ( 17 ) to people I do not know.

These are fantastic at the price for an everyday smoke. Will buy more of these.
